It has to be said: None of the Stargate series were worth a damn.

1. I sat through a couple of episodes...
Even the worst of "Star Trek the Next Generation", e.g. "Ethics", had infinitely more creativity...

2. My BIL loves them. Goes on and on about how much more popular than Trek the series was.

3. How many feature Stargate movies did they make again?
That would be my comeback.

5. Eh, they weren't intended to be high art.
They were intended to be entertaining, fairly light-hearted sci-fi that didn't take itself too seriously. And the first series succeeded in doing that for about 6-8 years. The second had a few good episodes, but only a few. (When people are writing fan-fic that's more entertaining than some of the actual episodes, it's a sign the studio needs to replace some of its writers.)

They ran a bit too long, but the first series wasn't bad by any means. The second squandered its potential, though.

If I want a sci-fi TV series that qualifies as high art, I'll go watch Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5. When I want brain candy, I'll watch Stargate.

6. Stargate: Universe looks dark and foreboding
Hopefully, some of the influence of BSG has rubbed off on it.

7. Not true - Stargate SG-1 seasons 2-5 and 9-10 were very good for what they were
Stargate was never top-line sci-fi like Battlestar Galactica - kind closer to Hercules and Xena, but there were some excellent episodes during the seasons I mentioned. I will agree that SG-Craplantis was just awful though. Too soon to tell about SG-Universe.

Also, the direct-to-video Stargate SG-1 movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum were both really, really good.

Stargate: Continuum Review: In-brief: Pleasantly delighted. -- http://www.scifiheaven.net/index.php/2008/07/05/stargate-continuum-review/
