My cat is dying
I'm pretty sure she will not make it through the night.

I got her in late '93 from a girl I would end up dating for a while and named her Animal after the drummer in the Muppet band. We bonded very quickly and it was only a short time before she would not tolerate anyone but me. Completely fearless, she attacked anyone that came into my apartment without me being there... and sometimes when I was. Twice maintenance people came in unscheduled and both times needed stitches, once in Mass and once here in Ohio.

When I was home we were together constantly. Playing fetch with a ball of tinfoil... Eating together on the couch (she almost always had some of whatever I was eating)... When on the computer, she would sleep on the back of the chair... At night she slept above my head... heh, I could not even use the bathroom alone, I had to leave the door open and she would sit in the doorway.

Back about six years ago, she got tumors on her chest and had to have all of her nipples removed. They did not give her good chances to survive so I looked around and got the best vets I could find for the surgery and she pulled through fine.

The last year has been really hard on her, I've had to move four times and... Well, she just did not take it well... A year ago she seemed just as she always had but with each move she seemed to age a whole lot. Yesterday, I noticed she seemed a little wobbly... just... going very slow and seeming unsure of how to walk. This morning when I got up, she was completely limp, just laying there and not able to respond. She had eaten a little of the food I had put out last night but very little, normally she would have eaten all of it. I gave her fresh food and water this morning but she seems unable to move her head even to get to it. I've made her comfortable on nice soft bedding... and I am keeping an eye on her, changing the bedding if she soils it as she cannot get up to get to the litter box. I really don't think there is much else to do. She does not seem to be in pain and I can still hear her purr a bit as I put my head gently against her side. I've got water in a saucer and she has been able to get some.

It has been almost 6 hours since I wrote the above... I stopped because Animal started making noises... I was with her at the end and she is now gone. I'll miss her a lot, she was a wonderful cat.

19. I'm so sorry Ohio Joe. My little guy was born in 93 and has been with me since
he was two weeks old (along with his brother, who died in 2003). Not a day goes by that I don't wonder how long I've got with him. He's fairly healthy for his age but things happen fast with kitties.

I'm glad you enjoyed your life with Animal and gave her all the love you did right until her last breath. She is a lucky girl. :hug:s to you. I know how sad it is.

27. I am sorry for your loss
but am glad you got to be with her at the end.

I lost a dog who died at the emergency clinic overnight where they wouldnt let me stay with her, and I have never gotten over my guilt for abondoning her in her last hours. (at least that was how it felt to me, even though it was not my decision not to be with her) It was the hardest I ever took the loss of a pet.

I'm crying right now,

She looks so much like my Darwin who
died from renal failure over five months
ago.

You took such good care of her!
You were both lucky to have each
other.

I wish we could keep our animal family members
around forever, and never lose them.

Take good care of yourself and know that she was loved
and had the best home possible.

47. Thank you all so much, I really appreciate it
I got into a vet today and they are arranging for her to be cremated and I was able to pick out a nice cherry box for her with an engraved plaque that has her paw prints (I have no idea how they do that) and name on it.

I can't thank you all enough though... right now nothing is going to make me feel good but you have all definitely made me feel better then I was feeling. Thanks :grouphug:

My neighbor is coming over in a few minutes and we are going to have some drinks and I'm going to tell him all of my Animal stories. I'll be back in a day or two. Thanks again everyone.

I still miss my lil bud Chuckanut, a six toed black n white male kitty who adopted me right after he was born. When my ex was about to give him to a good friend as a kitten, Chuckanut clawed the guy, jumped from his lap and crawled up my pant-leg to wind up sitting on my shoulder. Chuckanut was with me for 13-14 years until he passed away back in 2002. I miss him far more than I miss my ex
