What would you wear to a "1969" party?
My daughter and her husband have beeninvited to a birthday party for a friend born in 1969. They need a dress up type of idea. My daughter thinks John and Ono (the "sleep in").

Any other ideas? (I don't think the moon landing is too exciting...moon suits and cocktails, not so much). This is Massachussetts so don't even THINK about Chappaquidick.

2. I think Woodstock will be a major deal at this party.
Also, with this group, probably lots of Julia Child stuff. My dtr wants to go as Julia but we can't see her hubby as Paul Childs...kinda doesn't work...

4. That IS a good one. Not expensive, but could be an option for them both.
They once went as Groucho and Chico Marx and they looked terrific. It'd be nice to approximate THAT!

5. Janis Joplin and he as Joe Cocker, maybe?
Or any other rockers from that era that would be easier to approximate depending on their own looks, such as Grace Slick if your daughter has darker hair, and then pick someone who looks closer to your SIL's build and coloring.

7. dress like an old man in drag
and say you're J. Edgar Hoover?

or put on a body bag and toe tag?

or maybe dress like a black panther after an FBI raid--though you might need some skill in make up effects to simulate the gunshot wounds.

My dtr & hubby live in a Boston suburb so they are BIG Red Sox fans (surprise!).

But what a great idea for my son and his wife who live in NYC!

One of the more monumental collapses in baseball history, my Cubs in '69. I still really dislike the mets.

the Mets collapses over the last couple of years would keep me up at night. The 2007 collapse was worthy of the '64 Phillies.

The Mets' '69 season was the first thing that came to mind when I read the original post, that's all :hide:

14. If I were dressing up in 1969
as a middle-class Midwestern college student (which is what I was then), I would have worn a velvet minidress with a choker necklace, stud earrings, and long hair pulled back with curled tendrils. I would have worn a lot of eye make-up, some blusher, nd pale lipstick.

33. Well, when I was in 1969, I mainly wore an Army uniform, but by choice
I'd wear jeans and a plain color Tee shirt with some sort of running shoes or boots....exactly what I wear now, but I have a better watch.
I have been wearing the same style - or non style - since I was a kid, see no reason to stop now.

39. Tiny overalls.
I turned two in 1969.

Yeah, what's so exciting about a national effort to do the impossible, travel a quarter million miles away from the only safty anywhere in a tin can to land where no one has ever been before in a lander with all the structural soundness of a mylar tent.

40. Well, if it were me, it would have to be..
A shirt that says, in giant letters, "I DON'T BELONG HERE."

As for an ACTUAL answer to the question, I think most people here have the right idea, but there are some accessories you simply cannot do without:

John Lennon glasses
LOTS of hair, get a wig or extensions if you have to.
And if you really want to play up the protest side of things, get a henna or other temp tattoo (or face paint) of a peace sign on your cheek.

That's all I've got.
