Bob told me once that he was the most famous person in the world, and I told him that was silly. So he bet me five hundred bucks I couldn't find a person who didn't know him. I took him up on the bet. I asked the first person I saw--this was in Dallas--if they recognized Bob, who was standing beside me. They identified him immediately.
No matter who I asked, they knew him! I was stunned. So I said "Let's go to Europe and see what happens." Bob bought the tickets, and soon we were riding the trains, staying in hostels... Everywhere I went, I couldn't find one person who didn't know him.
So finally I said "I bet the Pope doesn't know you," and he just smirked. We took a train to Rome, and got into Vatican City, on Easter Sunday. Bob told me to wait outside, and he disappeared into the crowd. An hour later, the Pope steps out onto the balcony to give his Easter blessing. And right beside him is my friend, Bob Jackson!!
The crowd is cheering and chanting, and I turned to a little old woman next to me, determined to win my bet. "Excuse me, ma'am, but can you tell me who that man on the balcony is?"
She squinted up at the balcony, twisted her face in confusion, and said, "Why no, I have no idea who that is."
My heart leaped for joy! I did a little happy dance! And then she shook her head and said, "But whoever he is, he knows Bob Jackson."
