2. I'm still trying to figure out lines
I think for the most part I got it figured out but not quite the lingo. Do you mean you have USC winning by less then 7 points or losing?

Anyways should be a good game.

3. It means USC is spotting OSU 7 points.
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 10:02 AM by Forkboy
So to win the bet I need USC to win by 8 points or more to cover the spread of 7. So it could be written both ways, either as USC -7, or OSU +7. They each mean the same thing, that OSU is being spotted 7 points.

Confused yet? :)

The spread is a fiendish way to bet on football, but a lot more fun (and difficult) than just picking winners straight out. Without the spread you should get at least 10 games a week right in the NFL. With it, anything over 65% correct is doing very well.

Awsi Dooger down in the Sports Forum is a wiz on these things. I need to start hitting him up for tips. :)

4. First paragraph is the way I understand it
I was confused by the term "giving up" which I was thinking you meant you had "the under".

I see Awsi Dooger's posts sometimes, I completely agree about the squib kick. All I see that results from squib kicks is bad field position for opposing defenses but I see them called all the time late in the 4th. I agree with a lot of what he has to say.

5. The page in the playbook containing the squib kick should be torn out and burned.
One of the most useless and counter-productive plays in all of sports.

6. That's not fair - why would you go and ignore the 'prevent defense' like that?
Show a little love for the other "most useless and counter-productive plays in all of sports" :)

Unless, of course, you classify the squib as a useless play and the prevent as a useless strategy...

7. I did have an interesting dream about the USC/Ohio State game for some reason
It started off with a number of analysts picking USC to win and in my head in my dream I was thinking you know when teams see everyone picking them to lose that adds fuel to their fire.

Anyways in the game Barkley had a fine performance and USC and Ohio State was back and forth. Late in the game Barkley threw a costly interception and USC ended up losing.

Then it goes back to the analysts. The analysts were ripping Carroll for putting a true freshman in the game(even though he played well) and saying they should have went with another QB. Again in my mind in my dream I was thinking that if it was 5th year Senior that threw the costly interception, the press wouldn't of have been so negative. End of dream.

Anyways my dreams never come out to be true because I have dreamed about big football games before and the opposite was the reality. I believe USC will win the game and Shawn King picked Ohio St(in reality) to win so it's not all the analysts picking USC to win. ;)

This week should turn out better than last week in that respect :)

There was a good (well not good-competitive, but good-lots-of-action-and-lots-of-scoring) game last night between Toledo and Colorado. The Buffaloes are now 0-2 against mid-majors this year. (They lost to CSU last week and Toledo last night.)

Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 11:08 AM by JonLP24
Mike Nixon had 3 interceptions but I was really impressed with true freshman Vontaze Burfict. #16 recruit overall(top ranked LB) as rated by ESPN passed up USC, UCLA, Colorado, and Miami(Fl) to go to Arizona St. I swear to you he was in the backfield on every play and he put a real nasty shot on the QB. I know it was against Idaho St but you have to see him, Vontaze Burfict is the real deal my friend.

I remember my team Arizona St faced them twice in the College World Series. Sorry to say the Sun Devils beat them each time but eventually fell short to Texas in extra inning. I recall the announcers saying North Carolina had one of, if not the best hitter of the year as well as a top draft pick going into the pros. Forgot the name though.

If you count today going back one year it's been a year of success and failure. The football Cardinals of course, Arizona State made the tournament in both baseball and basketball but lost. In the case of basketball it was against Syracuse.

Is your friend still playing baseball in the minor leagues? My cousin(Dad's brother's son) is a starting SS in the Golden Baseball League which isn't the minor leagues but still professional baseball.

My friend played for Edmonton in that league this summer. What is your cousin's name?

It's still called the minors if they're not affiliated with MLB. The team my friend played for last year is the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, who are in the Atlantic League. The Crabs are about two miles away from us, and we see them play every chance we get.

Edit: sorry about asking the name. Maybe PM to me? My buddy's very curious.

I can't remember when he was signed because the article for his hometown(which my dad's side of the family lives) isn't online anymore. I believe it was sometime in early June.

This is his player page. His last name is the same as mine. Ryan Priddy.

Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 12:01 PM by JonLP24
Last time I checked they were in the bottom part of the standings. They have a game today against the Vipers. Oh do I wish it was on TV.

This article gives him a real positive mention.

Roster additions a big key to playoff run

Former Diamondbacks second baseman Junior Spivey, shortstop Ryan Priddy, closer Reid Price, starting pitcher Vince Davis and reliever Cibney Bello all joined the team after the first month of the season, as manager Tim Johnson assembled players for the franchise's inaugural season.

<snip>

Shortstop Ryan Priddy
• Stats: .321 average, 16 doubles, 59 games
• Back story: Priddy joined the team June 11 after Johnson, his former manager in Lincoln, Neb., extended an invitation. He had been working in traffic operations and coaching a high school team in his hometown of Loveland, Colo.
• Impact: He is enjoying his best season in four years of pro ball.
• Quotable: "I've just been working with (hitting coach Pete LaCock), a few minor things. He's the best hitting coach I've ever had and the best in the league."
http://www.azstarnet.com/sports/307357

That is really cool that he knows him. He was really fun to be around with during the summer's I got to see my dad growing up. I only seen him play once when I was a kid and he hit a home run in that game.

But I hope they kick the livin' crap out of OSU. Going with my PAC-10 loyalty there.

I want Notre Dame and Michigan to cancel each other out, imploding into dust and disappearing from Earth.

Torn between UCLA and Tennessee - I'm a big fan of both teams. The SEC is my favorite conference alongside the PAC-10.

The UW Huskies don't have much of a chance this year, but liked the fight they gave LSU last week.

The Cowboys host #2 Texas today. The Cowboys have their hands full, to be sure, but either way the game is sure to be a huge deal in Laramie. I know that DUer TransitJohn has been looking forward to it :)

So far the Cowboys have held their own--Texas is only up by three points, and Wyoming just forced a punt. And the crowd sounds into it.

That's cool. :) Do you have ties there? I always cheer for Wyoming (well, when they play CSU I don't cheer too hard, and if they ever played OU I'd root hard against them) -- but then I grow up in Wyoming, so I've got cause ;)

Incidentally, the game is still 3-0, but Texas just blew a fake punt from deep in their own territory, and so Wyoming now has the ball at the Texas 14.

The Cowboys and their fans are CHARGED for this game.

I was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado but lived in Arizona for the most part since I was 4. Dad's side of the family as well as my brother and nephew live in Loveland, Co. Arizona State and Colorado State is my #1 and #2 favorite teams. 63. definitely a surprising first half
Wyoming and their fans were clearly charged up for the biggest game in the stadium's history. They didn't move the ball terribly well, but they were sure sound defensively.

But it looks like Texas is coming back to form now.

72. Damn. Two good games going on at the same time
Oklahoma St is at the 5 but they had to waste a time out due to a run. It is a questionable decision but they gained 3 first downs running the ball. Still a minute left but only 2 timeouts.

They're down by 10 at least give yourselves a chance. Going to tune back into Michigan and Notre Dame but going for it on 4th down and down by 10 makes no damn sense.

Second half about to get underway! :woohoo:

"BYU looked impressive today at least. I was half afraid they were going to come out and look like goats in their next game."

I was too, but they showed up. And between OSU losing and Texas looking awfully flat, I've got to admit my hopes for this season have been buoyed. And as good as Miami looked against FSU, the Seminoles are getting beat by Jacksonville State, an FBS team, so perhaps we needn't write that game off just yet :)

85. Two ACC teams in trouble against FBS schools
Florida State scored a late touchdown to go up by 4 against Jacksonville State with less than a minute left. (They wound up scoring another defensive touchdown, so the final score won't look as close as it was.)

Meanwhile, James Madison and Maryland look to be headed to overtime ...

93. Did you watch the game?
I was in the same grade level as Channing Trotter is Junior High and High School. According to the stats he struggled but he is very talented. It kinda irks me when that poster called them a 'shitty' UNLV team. He wasn't very likable in Junior High but I'm sure matured.

94. I caught most of it via the web.
In the second half Clausen, the UNLV backup quarterback, came in the second half and started slicing and dicing
the Beavs. I don't know who's better (Clausen, or the starter, Clayton) than who, but last night Clausen was on.
Their wide receivers made some fine catches.

I don't think UNLV's shitty, not at all. I take it they expected to win last night. Obviously
they didn't have doubts when they were behind 20-7. Of course, it's doubtful they're Utah or BYU.

Nor do I think the Beav's are all that either. Not close.

96. They're shitty.
UNLV hasn't done anything in football this decade. Their best season was like 8-wins in 2000.

Outside of that, they're abysmal.

Maybe this year will be different, but I've seen the Rebels up close since they joined the WAC and subsquentlely the Mountain West (I'm a Utes fan). They sometimes pull it together for a game or two, but seem to always blow it in the end.

Last year, they were 5-6, one victory away from a bowl berth (the first since 2000) and all that was standing in their way was a 1-10 San Diego State Aztecs team. They lost 21-42.

No bowl game. Another losing season and the realization they're trash.

98. I'm not saying it's easy.
But a spade is a spade.

UNLV has underperformed in football for three decades now. They are in a prime spot, a growing conference and they're trash.

Even Colorado State can sniff better success than the Rebels.

But maybe it's because Las Vegas is a college basketball town. I don't know. But the bottom line is that they're not a good program. They haven't been a good program in my lifetime.

That doesn't mean I could play better. But do you not agree they suck?

Because I've seen Channing Trotter outperform everyone except the running back from Hamilton High School so to say that they suck isn't true. They gave one of the top teams in the Pac 10 a run for their money and I believe UNLV's QB is really good.

100. Hey, I'm not saying he sucks.
I'm saying THEY suck. There are teams out there with talent and inept coaching.

I know UNLV's head coach. He was Utah's OC in 2003 and 2004. He's a horrible coach. All the talent in the world won't change the fact he sucks and because he sucks, they suck.

Look, I'm not doggin' Trotter. I am, however, doggin' the program. It's a horrible, horrible program.

He might be great. But they're not.
