What would you have gotten at the Mushroom Festival?
Kennett Square, PA claims to be the mushroom capital of the US.

No hallucinogenics, but yesterday the booths there did offer:
Sauteed mushrooms
Pickled mushrooms
Mushroom salad
Mushroom pizza
Portabello wraps
Portabello "burgers"
Chicken cheese steaks with mushrooms
Regular philly cheese steaks with mushrooms
Beer-battered mushrooms
Fried breaded mushrooms/mushroom fritters (don't know the difference, I only had the former)
Mushroom and brie crepes
Mushoom egg rolls
An entire tent full of stations serving different mushroom soups, all delicious
T-shirts that said "Shitake Happens"

As someone whose favorite food is mushrooms, I was in culinary heaven. My friend watches Top Chef, and got to meet and talk to Paula and Miguel, but we didn't get to see them cooking mushrooms, sadly.

What would you have ordered?

1. These sound especially delicious:
Mushroom and brie crepes
Mushoom egg rolls
An entire tent full of stations serving different mushroom soups, all delicious

I love mushrooms, though I'd never go hunting for wild mushrooms on my own. I remember one of Jamie Oliver's "Jamie at Home" shows where he went picking wild mushrooms with a guide. I have a good book on them, though the website Fungi Perfecti is easier to search ;)

When I still shopped at Whole Foods, I was missing the fact that they weren't carrying either oyster or chantrelle mushrooms. I tried both of those varieties in recent years and loved their flavors over "normal" mushrooms.

So, what were your favorite choices? :)

7. Sadly, I was full of soup by the time I got to the crepes
or I would have had the crepes. I heard the eggrolls were great, too.

2. I would have gotten
Beer battered mushrooms to start, followed by the mushroom and brie crepes, and if I was still hungry I would have taken the plunge for a regular Philly cheese steak with mushrooms. Mmmm. Sounds delish.

12. Shit, I haven't been able to find any decent ones in over ten years.
The few times I've seen them recently in a grocery store they have been shriveled and nasty. They reminded me of an old Carlin skit - "Those are rats' assholes, Don" - "Sure make a hell of a fondue!"

Mushrooms are magnificent and nobody in my family eats them, so I do without.

16. Mushroom and brie crepes, definitely!
The beer batter and fried breaded mushrooms (provided they had the appropriate dipping sauce - a horseradish not a ranch!) and probably the sauteed, as well. And egg rolls and pizza.

Hell! I love mushrooms. I should have just said all of the above.

17. I had fungi fettucine at my local restaurant last week. It was so good
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 08:04 PM by applegrove
that I went back and ordered it again. So I would have to say sauteed. Yummy. I can't wait to go and sautee some mushroom and have it again (it was only on a temp menu at the restaurant so I can't order it anymore). Funny I always though of mushrooms as pretty tasteless until now. I'm a convert.

18. I would have gotten the Culture Shock with side of OMFG I'm-so-in-the-wrong-place pasta.
Of course, I would have expected an entirely different menu, most likely an illegal one.

Shrooms
Awesome Shrooms
Dude! Shrooms
Fuckin A Shrooms
and the ever famous, You-have-got-to-be-kidding-me!!!???!!! Shrooms!!!!???!!!.

I probably would have left quite sad.

20. Dammit we forgot about it again.
That or the SO didn't really want to go. He works for Modern Mushroom so we get all the shrooms we want. Not sure anyone could beat his creamed mushrooms or his stuffed portabellas.

Good choice.

It was hot and crowded (I think since Saturday sort of rained out, they had two days' worth of crowds in one day).

You might have enjoyed the soup tent - all variations on the same theme, all but one were good.

32. Instead of going there we ended up
watching two generators being moved on the long slow slog to TMI for Exelon. It was pretty interesting and drew a crowd. It is heading to Willow Street by way of Rt. 272 now. More photos here if you are interested. Not sure how close it will get to you but it was worth the wait to watch them if you get a chance.

28. They don't leave enough room for other mushroom treats
Plus around here, they're available all the time, everywhere. Whereas a mushroom crepe is harder to find, especially since the long-ago demise of The Magic Pan restaurants.

then definitely the philly cheese steak. According to my friends from PA, it is impossible to find authentic cheese steak sandwiches in south TX.
