I'm not really anti-authority

I have no problem with authority if its earned. If its deserved. My boss, for example, earned his authority. He did what I did for 5 years.

But the guy who says "you do what I said because I said so!" leads me to reply "Well FUCK OFF because I said so!"

And I think that's a big problem in our culture. Certain people feel they are owed respect and authority. Preachers, Cops - lots of these folks think they didn't have to earn it - just use it.

Real, legitimate authority is something one earns by virtue of ability, knowledge, and/or wisdom, not because you merely have a title. People can't know everything, so we have to defer to authorities, it's impossible not to in our modern, high-tech world. When you think all authority is bad you get anti-intellectual and pseudo-intellectual stupidity, such as the New Age Alternative Medicine fools and the Anti-Vaccine nuts.

I have no problem with legitimate, earned authority. The trouble I have is with overbearing authority, those who feel entitled to be unquestioningly obeyed, regardless of whether they've earned it or not; narcissistic bullies act as if God died and left them in charge.
