What's the highest mileage vehicle you've ever purchased used?
Just out of curiosity. Of course, I realize that higher mileage typically means more things can go wrong or more work will have to be done, but have you ever bought a higher mileage car and been happy with it for the long term?

:hi:

1. Bought a '96 Suburban with 197K on the clock, three years ago.
It was from the second owner, and was registered in Louisiana, so it hadn't seen any harsh northern winters. Seller was motivated; that was when gas prices spikes up to around $2 (Ah, the Goos Old Days!).

Let's see, in the last three years, I've put new wires and plugs, new alternator and serpentine belt, brakes on all corners, shocks and a new exhaust system, so, mostly stuff that just wears out anyway and needs replacing on a regular basis.

Motor uses hardly any oil, doesn't leak, and starts every time.

I was thinking of trading it in under the Cash for Clunkers deal, as I only gave $3500 for it and would have made out to the good, but I already have a regular car and need something with a lot of room to drag my junk around for work.

I wish I could find another just like it, in as good a shape, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

2. Seriously, why equate "vehicle" with "car"?
It's been the 21st Century 9 years now.

Isn't it time we got over the whole "cars are the only mode of transportation" bullshit?

9. taterguy has a point
There are many kinds of vehicles out there. Everything cars is not sustainable for much longer.

10. Thanks for the update, Wavy Gravy.
This was just a post asking for personal experiences with high-mileage vehicles. I'm sorry I didn't specify CARS and not, I don't know, trains or rickshaws or unicycles.

Moot point anyway. I've decided to buy a chair and four slaves who will carry me around everywhere. It's more sustainable.

30. Well talking of high mileage "vehicles"...
... this would be nice...

I hate to think of the mileage a 1962 Routemaster would have... I don't even think these vehicles would have odometers... typically public transit vehicles may get their engines and transmissions replaced every 250,000 miles or so but the buses do keep soldiering on. Buses are even known to be re-bodied, so although you have a nice new shiny body, the chassis has been going since the 1970's...

Mark.

5. In 1996, I bought a 1982 Datsun 280ZX with over 90,000 miles on it.
It was a great little car. I loved it. I drove it to about 132,000. Then I got married and traded it in for a four-door sedan with automatic transmission; something my wife could drive. I still miss that car sometimes...

11. That's what I want to hear.
I'm looking for a 1998-2000 Volvo V70 AWD. My wife drives an S70, I like the way it drives and the AWD, and I need a wagon for my business.

Thanks! :hi:

12. My parents handed me an 87 T-Bird w ith 135k on it
Head gasket blew at 255k. Went through a harmonic balancer, an idler tensioner, a radiator, and a brake master cylinder, a pair of front rotors, and two batteries (one I broke, one just wore out).

Bought an 89 Old Regengy 98 with I think 140k on it, sold it a year ago for $500 with about 192k on it. Didn't put any money into it except a new battery, but it was starting to have wiring problems when I got rid of it. Much more highway driving in this one than the T-Bird.

You've got to figure that at 100,000 miles plus, the weak members of that year and model of car have already been winnowed out, so what's left are the ones that will probably last indefinately.

13. In 2004 I got a Honda 1997 CRV with 108,000 miles on it.
It still gets great gas mileage (despite being big enough to haul around a buttload of music equipment in) and runs like a dream, and it only cost me $8K.

14. In 1990 I bought a 1980 Datsun Longbed pickup with 170K on it.
Cost me $300. It finally fell apart with 375K miles on it. I used it to deliver newspapers on a rural route-100 miles every day on third world grade back roads. I probably spent about $600 on repairs and about $700 in tires in that time. Out on the highway it got 34mpg on a 1200 mile one way trip with about 600 pounds of cargo in the back.

16. 1996 Mercury Cougar
I bought it at 214,000 miles in 2005. I had the tire rods replaced at about 240,000 miles. Never had any type of engine trouble. Of course I was religious in my engine maintenance.

In August of 2009 I sold it to my nephew at 250,000 miles. I talked to him about the importance of oil changes before he left with it. I hope he listened, that was a great car.

18. I SOLD my 91 Escort wagon with 150K on it - last I heard it was up over 300K.
I loved that car, but the back seat was too narrow for a child seat and two booster seats. The 93 Sable wagon took over. It is sort of funny. Both are silver and the Sable looks like a larger version of the Escort. I sold the Escort to a family friend and he's still driving it. I haven't talked to him in two or three years but the car had already crossed 300K. The day I bought it (new), I drained the oil and replaced it with Mobile-1 synthetic. That's all I ever put in it. Perhaps that has something to do with the engine life - not sure.

20. Accord with about 250K on the body
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 08:58 AM by gmoney
The engine/trans had been replaced with a drivetrain that "only" had 87K on them, but the body was in good shape, and the interior was great.

Ideal car... the only reason I got rid of it was my stepfather was getting rid of a newer Accord and gave it to me for what the dealer offered him as trade-in.

Just recently bought a 6-year old Accord with about 140K on it, and it runs great.

I've had GM, Ford, Nissan and Honda, and there's no comparison. Honda knows how to make a great car that will last a long time with minimal problems.

21. I had a little Ford Cortina in the late '60s.
That car would go forever on a full tank. The bad things about it were that it had no power and whenever it rained or I went through a puddle, it would stall out.

22. 181000 km Subaru
But it had papers showing it had been lovingly maintained. Previous owner kept a log book and every receipt.

Now it's lucky if it gets an oil change.

23. a 1995 ford windstar it had 125k miles
and it died a month after we got it, engine blew, then the transmission, then the front end went out. It was a waste of time, and money.

I haven't had much luck with higher mileage cars, usually we buy used around 40k miles or so.
