This morning a United States Congressman gave me his business card.

It was Patrick Murphy of PA.

He was speaking today at the PA Biotech Center in Doylestown to a forum of start up biotech executives and entrepreneurs.

When he was introduced it was announced that tea would not be served with lunch, since the congressman was sure to be tired of teabaggers. Yes, that was actually said.

He identified himself as a "blue dog" Democrat, which I was surprised to learn, is actual a formal group with formal membership with 61 members.

According to his speech, his wife is a Republican and he insists on strong defense and that all new programs, including healthcare, be "revenue neutral."

A poll was taken by a show of hands, asking how many people in the audience favor a "public option." Surprisingly, given the nature of the audience, a slight majority (myself included) clearly favored the "public option."

I spoke to the Congressman briefly about science education, and he gave me his card and the name of his assistant who I should contact if I wanted to do more.

The card is really cool, embossed gold letters.

This is the third congressman with whom I have spoken. The longest conversation I have had with a congress person is with Rush Holt, my congressman.

Murphy seems like a really nice guy. I can't say I agree with him on everything, but he's definitely a good man.

I can't say that I agree with my own Congressman, Holt, on everything, but I admire him all the same.

2. I just went upstairs to get it. Actually only the eagle is embossed gold.
The lettering is blue raised print. Until looking at it again, I thought it was all gold print. I was wrong.

I'll be honest here: It may sound meretricious, but I really don't want congressmen handing out cards that are made at overnight prints for a dime each.

The office deserves some respect, but maybe I'm old fashioned.

3. I agree, absolutely -
I want my representatives to have all the elegance we can afford. I believe in the integrity and dignity of their offices, and that includes that trappings. The details matter, like the business card that stands out from the others.

There is a way to do business cards that's a whole lot cheaper than embossed, but it has the exact feel and look of embossed. If you use the high quality paper (I think it's called "tag"), you can get away with it. Wouldn't surprise me if someone in the Government Printing Office is in charge of all of that stuff............................
