I've decided I want a dual quad core cuda machine. But I don't have $20,000
to spare. So, naturally, I've decided to come grovel in the Lounge for donations

It would be a very nice machine, with two 2.93Ghz CPUs, 64GB 1333 ECC RAM, and four Nvidia Tesla cards so that I could compute at 4 teraflops while sitting on my fat ass at home

Anyone donating to this worthy effort will get, as a token of my appreciation, a valuable prize, such as a rare signed full-color glossy signed print of the machine!

1. What are you doing for monitors and printer?
Anything less than dual 24" monitors, a 12x18 Wacom tablet and an HP 48" plotter is wasted on that kind of computing power :D

2. Good point. I was gonna get the machine first, then come back whining to the Lounge
that I needed another $20,000 for peripherals

7. Then save the minimum $40k
and go with cloud computing for a really badass system and capabilities :D

Of course, all of your data will be on other computers, none of which are in your possession or control :P

3. For 20K I can build you the machine, with peripherals
Let me know when you get to 20k, and I'll build you the system.

I will not charge you a penny over 20k.

5. Maybe we could eliminate the middle man. Instead of me raising money
to give to you so you could give me a kick-ass parallel desktop, maybe you could just give the parallel desktop and raise the money yourself? According to standard economic models, that would simplify the transaction and reduce costs

6. The first time I ever wanted a computer that cost five grand was decades ago:
this summer, $250 got me a much much better machine than that first fantasy. So maybe a quarter century from now, I'll be able to pick up a multiprocessor 5 teraflop machine with over 50gb memory for $1000. But I'm afraid that by then the machine I'll want is gonna be $100,000 or so
