Not a pit bull fan; found a pit bull puppy; now what?
I have a baby pit bull in a cat box at my feet as I write this. I've posted in more than one thread here that I wouldn't care to have a pit bull, but this little thing was standing like a statue in the middle of the road and when I stopped the car and opened the door, she hopped in.

We can't keep her but she deserves a good home. I've already emailed the only certified pit bull rescue group in my state but am not sure how or if they can help.

Any suggestions are welcome.

1. if you keep her, make sure you socialize her ALOT as a pup
most dogs that have a tendency to aggression do much better if they meet lots of people and other animals as a pup, makes them less likely to be assholes

2. well, one good thing..
my husband thinks we can keep her until we find her a home and she will be well-socialized with us. We have an old motherly dog and 2 cats.

4. hypnotize her
and convince her she's a golden retriever, and not a pit bull. Everybody likes golden retrievers.

9. chihuahuas are even more aggressive than pit bulls, they just can't bite as hard
and while she's being introduced to new people, be gentle but stern if you see any agressive behavior then praise her to the skies when she's friendly and waggy tails

25. You don't have to tell me. I have a Chihuahua and also a Rottweiler.
Well, the Chihuahua thinks she is the Rottweiler. She is a mean little critter. She will attack strangers. The only person she likes is me. My Rottie is a big, sweet baby.

21. If you put her on CL and she is a pit bull, that "somebody" will probably use her for fighting,
or as a bait dog to train other dogs to fight.

Please do not do that.

10. First of all, thank you for stopping and picking this puppy up.
If you were in Florida (no idea where you are) I'd be more equipped to help you.

Be careful how you place her, please, but I will be surprised if that pit bull rescue can't/won't help you.

Also, puppies that young/little often look like breeds that they aren't. Just an fyi.

After I bathed her, I wrapped her in a big towel b/c she was shaking and gave her to my husband who held her like a baby for about 15 minutes.

Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 11:11 PM by JonLP24
I have one myself and she is the sweetest most obedient dog I ever had. I do have to protect her at all times from the older, larger female Gordan Setter. I have the pit in a cage at night when I'm asleep and I have the Setter on a leash because sometimes she will violently attack the pit.

18. It's not good timing for us.
Especially since I've never even considered owning a pit bull. But if we did keep her, I'd want to make sure we really followed through with training and the timing just isn't right.

20. Good luck --
Not falling in love.

Here's the caveat -- I'm not a dog person. I don't like 'em. Never have, though everybody in my fam is all about the dogs. My best friend has two pitties. I would walk to the end of the earth for those babies.

Historically, pitties (American Staffordshires) were "nurse dogs" -- put in the nursery with the children. They're amazingly loyal and loving, and if they're not abused by morans, they're remarkably good with children. (But if people aren't abused by morans, they're also remarkably good with puppies and children...) Pitties are also big marshmallows, and since they're short-haired, they're easier on people like me with dander allergies.

Please try not to take her to the pound -- if she's not taken by someone who wants a "tough dog" and will ruin her, she'll probably end up getting turfed eventually.

If you really can't keep her, then ask for the PB rescue's adoption form, and make that a requirement when you put her up for adoption -- call and check the vet reference, the personal references, et cetera. Also, don't give her away -- Free to good home means people won't value her. It's weird, but if people pay for something, they take better care of it, and that includes animals.

Remember, back in the 70s, German Shepherds had a terrible rep. In the 80s, it was Dobermans. In the 90s, Chows. Guess what -- it's not the breeds. It's the people.

The breed can't be held responsible for being provoked in such a manner.

31. Love on her a lot
First, thank you for stopping and picking her up, poor little girl puppy. Years ago neighbors of ours had a lovely little pit bull puppy. She was the biggest love sponge I had ever seen. And good with children. I agree with the poster up-stream. Socialize the heck out of her as often and as much as you can. And do attend puppy obedience classes sooner rather than later.

34. Pit bull is an 'umbrella term' used often by the media (Big picture)
to describe many dogs that fall under the Molosser family. That picture is evidence of that. While I can't pin point that specific breed my dog is an American Pit Bull Terrier and while I don't have a picture she looks EXACTLY like this....

35. yeah. I feel guilty for labeling her before I really knew.
But stray pit bulls are a fact of life in my neighborhood, so it was easy to assume. At any rate, even if she has some pit bull in her, the person who has her now will be able to handle her appropriately. I am so happy for that little pup.

38. While I never owned a Staffordshire Terrier (a breed that is often labeled 'pit bull')
My dog APBT is not all that challenging to train. My 2 Gordan Setters are the 'evaluate my options' type of breed when told to do something type of dog. Of course any dog needs a responsible owner. I'm happy you found one. :toast:
