OK - I'm going to ChiTown again!
All hail the mighty Windy City!!!!

Damn, I love going to Chicago - but I want to try something different there this time.

So throw a bunch of "different" suggestions to me to do in ORD

I always love a Chicago Trip. On the menu this time (3 days) will be Flossmoor Station. Other than that, the calendar is wide open.

So what should I see? Did the House of Blues there, as well as Downtown. Did Wrigley.

What else? What else?

1. There's a new "modern wing" at the Art Institute
Well, I don't know how long it's been since you've been to Chicago, so it may not be new to you, but it opened in May. It's nice. Even if you don't want to go to the museum itself you could check out the Nichols Bridgeway, which also opened in May, and connects Millennium Park and the Art Institute over Monroe Avenue. It's got great sight lines of Millennium Park and the skyline.

Chicago is great. Have a good time!

2. You might want to cross post in the Illinois forum
I am not sure where your interests lie, museums, art, architecture, sports, music, theater, night scene, ethnic neighborhoods?

4. Visit the southside...
...home of course to the Obama family...but also there are many things to see, particularly near the lake, whose parks are gorgeous...there is Jackson Park (where the 1893 World's Fair was held), the University of Chicago (where Obama taught at the law school), the Museum of Science and Industry...also the Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods have some impressive architecture...there is also a Frank Lloyd Wright house near the U of C campus. The rapper Common is also a local hero.

Visiting the southside will also give you a good sense of how racially segregated Chicago remains...the urban renewal of Hyde Park in the 1950s is pretty interesting as well on that subject.

5. hit Erricos at 5713 W Roosevelt Rd in Cicero
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 02:10 PM by datasuspect
Google says the place is closed, but it isn't (it was open in March, the last time i was in that area).

old goombah place. they don't observe the smoking ban (ashtrays!), decor unretouched since the 40s. dark, dank, have to buzz you in place.

if people don't know you, they might kick your ass.

tell them your uncle "Joe + italian surname" on 58th ave and 15th street used to go there (there probably were at least 300 joes in and around that corner at one time or other).

other secret hint: they operate 24-7, but they have to know you to let you in after hours.

it is a truly historic dive bar place. at one time in the past, the entire street was filled with bars and whorehouses. this was when the outfit ran Cicero a bit more openly.

they have a convenient selection of hookers along the roosevelt road strip if you are so inclined, plus the westside open air drug supermarkets are just a quick jog across the eisenhower.

6. Have you been to Hot Doug's?
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 07:44 PM by AwakeAtLast
Great place, always busy. Doug is extremely nice.

Cafe Iberico was great for tapas, I'll assume it still is.

Frontera Grill and Mia Francesca are favorites of my sister, who lived in that area of Chicago for 15 years.

On edit: one of her favorite bars was the Hideout.

Hope you have a great time!

8. R.J. Grunt's -
a Lincoln Park/Chicago institution.

My husband and I were their first customers when they opened back in the early seventies, and we lived at the corner of Clark and Armitage, a couple of blocks from the restaurant.

A real legend, this place. Loads of fun, and the food is quite good.

9. Were you once Absinthe?
Just wondering.

Have you ever been to the B'hai Temple in Wilmette? As you can see, it's quite beautiful.

10. my old house in Homewood, 18358 Highland Ave, is a national shrine (to me)
it's only about 2 1/2 miles from the station, and you can see my signature in the original porch concrete, along with those of my brother and sister

what could be more fascinating than that?

then you could go down the block to the Pony League Field, where I pitched a no hitter (the height of my athletic career)...Olive, just east of Highland

then, back to Highland, and down to Ridge Road, where a right turn will put you in view of the Dairy Queen, where Joey Heaton used to hang out, and with another greaser friend, used to try to beat me up all the time

11. If you like architechture, you're in luck.
Take the architectural river cruise. Or ride the train to Oak Park and look at the Frank Lloyd Wright houses.
