God dammit. I was fucking suckered, # 2
Original thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=9036780

I FINALLY got in touch with a live person at one of the two places that ripped me off. This person told me she was "opening a ticket" and "escalating to upper management" my request for a refund. I like how they use those phrases (in quotes) to make one feel as if something important is happening. I got a ticket number but I'd bet it's the same "ticket number" they give to everyone.

I have to wait one week to call again. Fuck that; I'm calling again tomorrow and every single day until I get an answer.

Turns out that I may not be eligible for a refund because I didn't cancel within the 14-day period. Well, yes, you're giving me a refund, you sleazy bastards, because I'm returning your worthless shit to you.

Speaking of worthless shit, how do you think this all makes me feel?

When do I go to the BBB? Anyone ever filed anything with the BBB?

When will I stop feeling like a loser?

Am I ever going to get my money back?

1. BBB is kind of worthless in this situation

the company must be a member of BBB for them to take any reports or for it to have any impact. Even then, it just goes on their scorecard, sort of like an eBay seller rating.

Sadly, this company is probably operating within "the letter of the law" and can point to various fine print and stuff that you overlooked. The good news is, if you're persistent, they may well appease you with at least a partial refund. They make their real money on people who are too lazy to cancel, or figure it's not worth fighting for.

Not sure if there's still a Consumer Protection Agency or if the FTC would have any interest.

There may be a "buyer beware" warning forum about this company someplace. Just Google "(Company name) rip-off" or something like that and you'll probably find others in the same boat as you. This is often a good thing to do BEFORE making a purchase from any online or TV marketing outfit.

3. Contact your state's attorney general office - they will have
a Consumer Complaint department that you can file a complaint with. Frequently a business will refund quicker if an government agency with some teeth gets involved.

no advice beyond the good advice others have provided, but you will stop feeling like a loser the second you decide to realize that you're not. You're the victim of an attempted ( and so far successful, but only so far) robbery. I don't see how being a victim of criminals makes one a loser.
