Post a pic of a part of your state that seceded from the rest of the state!
This is Hatteras Island. In 1862 it broke way from North Carolina to re-join the Union.

5. I don't know how well that would've worked anyway, considering how few people live in that region.
Would've been somewhere between Wyoming and Alaska in population density, if I'm not mistaken.

In terms of total population, it would be 51st in the nation, with a population of 423,004.

It would be the 41st largest state in the nation, with an area of 67,472 sq mi.

It would have 6.27 people per square mile, so it would be between Wyoming and Montana.

On edit: that's the narrowest definition of Jefferson. A broader definition would have a population of 1.3 million.

9. We been there, done that. The Free State of Winston (AL)
Winston County's representative at the January 1861 Alabama Secession Convention was Charles Christopher Sheats, a 21 year old school teacher. He refused to sign Alabama's ordinance of secession, even after it had been passed by a vote of 61 to 39. Sheets became so vocal in his opposition that he was finally arrested. On his release, he became a leader of a pro-neutrality group. Later, he would become an open supporter of the Union and spend most of the war in prison.<3> Many Winston County residents refused induction into the Confederate Army, and some spoke openly of organizing troops to support the Union. The worried state authorities moved to enforce obedience through conscription and loyalty oaths, which only made matters worse. A meeting was held at Looney's Tavern, where a series of resolutions were passed. These stated that the people of Winston County had no desire to take part in the war and intended to support neither side. One resolution declared that if a state could secede from the Union, then a county could secede from the state. Richard Payne, a pro-Confederate, laughed with delight. "Winston County secedes!" he shouted. "Hoorah for the Free State of Winston!" From Payne's remark was born the legend of the "Republic of Winston".<3>

In April 1862, the Union Army invaded north Alabama. Many of the pro-Union Winstonians enlisted in Union Army's new 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment. While the Union 1st Alabama Cavalry would play a heroic part in the war, they did so generally outside of Alabama.

Winston County itself was suffering from its own internal war. Confederate Home Guards in the county were poorly disciplined and often used their uniforms as excuses to settle old grudges. The Union men responded by forming their own irregular bands, and by the end of the war Winston County had been largely devastated by its own people.

After the war, Winston County became a bastion of the Republican Party in Alabama, in sharp contrast to the overwhelming support for the Democrats in the rest of the state. Winston's unique history has become the basis of a small tourist industry, which includes an outdoor drama loosely based on the events. A passenger boat named the "Free State Lady" plies the waters of nearby Smith lake. "Dual Destiny", a memorial statue of a young soldier dressed half as a Union troop and half as Confederate, is frequently photographed.<4>

23. That little understood stance is only recently becoming understood.
Many in South fought for the Union, and some were quite famous, including George Thomas.

William Techumseh Sherman was living in Louisiana when the war broke out.

All of West Virginia seceded from Virginia, the only secession of the era to stick.

Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky and even Alabama if I recall correctly, provided regiments to both sides.

This tale is covered by Richard Nelson Current's book "Linoln's Loyalists" 1992, Oxford Press.

Then there's "A South Divided, Portraits of Dissent in the South" by David Downing Cumberland Press, 2007.

Virginia took its portion back in the buildup to the Civil War Unpleasantries Between The States. It is today's Arlington County (see how the boundaries line up on a map).

14. On April 7th, 1850, Rough and Ready, California, seceded from the Union.
The Great Republic of Rough & Ready lasted only three months as the worlds smallest nation. On July 4, the same year -"Old Glory" went up the flagpole and Rough & Ready rejoined the Union.

Note: California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850, so Ruff and Ready was really ahead of its time.

they figured it would be easier to get international aid from the United States than from the state or federal government.
