What is it with Lady Gaga?
I mean, I've never seen her perform or heard her music, until now on SNL, and I'm like, eh. I mean, is it Madonna 2, another Britney? There's nothing new there. Scantily clad young women writhing in unison to a generic beat. I thought she was a groudbreaker. This is just boring, warmed-over leftovers. Nothing new. I'm disappointed. Am I missing something?

"Generic" is a good word. She probably appeals to people who haven't listened to a good variety of music.

3. the groundbreakingness is not going to show on SNL...
basically the sexuality in Lady Gaga's lyrics is far more overt than either Madonna or Britney has ever thought of being...and that's really saying something. :(

11. yeah, so i guess i was wrong...
i thought the first time i saw her it was at some televised disney event... ?? anyway

no, she doesn't sound like something disney produced.

reading wiki about her:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Gaga
"She had previously told a crowd at one of her concerts that her song "Poker Face" lyrically discusses fantasizing about a woman while being in bed with a man"

(yeah--like who among us hasn't done that? seriously!)

25. I'll tell you anyway, since you cared enough to throw your...
2 cents in.

She's Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, singer and songwriter who started performing as a teenager and took the name from a Queen song. She's written songs for a number of "A" stars, gotten loads of awards, has some huge hits, and got the costume thing from working with Lady Starlight in burlesque and gay clubs around town.

It's called performance art, and she's into it.

37. I understand what performance art is as I've had friends say
a form of chaotic radio I once created was "performance art". Maybe yes, maybe no; I just did it for fun and not profit.

I would say, however, by many of the comments so far that if what she does is performance art, then she hasn't gotten the concept down pat yet. Perhaps she needs to study some Laurie Anderson first ;)

55. I remember Laurie Anderson, but this..
ia a whole 'nother thing.

Personally, I don't think it's so much performance art as just putting on a big show. Damn near everybody does it, and they have for years. Gaga just goes over the top. Must be those burlesque and drag influences.

Anyway, my point, apparently lost in all this, was that rather than rely on comments on a message board, check her out yourself and make up your own mind.

(Me, I like her-- she's having a lot of fun and we're let in on the joke. But I don't think I'd pay to see it.)

32. I'm digging the performance art
So far I've only seen her perform at the VMAs and watched her last performance on SNL last night. I personally thought the VMA performance was incredible, but I knew most people wouldn't understand it. The costume on SNL was cool looking, but I was more impressed when she got on the piano. Love her or hate her, there's no denying that she puts a lot of thought and effort into what she does. I respect that.

67. Actually she's a student of music educated at New York University
who moved from songwriting to performing when several other acts said they liked her voice on her demo recordings. One producer said she sang like Freddie Mercury and started calling her Gaga, after "Radio Gaga" after the Queen song, which is where her name came from. She's a Mozart type who taught herself to play the piano at 4, was invited to Juliard's School of Music, and attended NYU's School of the Arts where she studied musical composition.

Personally I can hear why she was compared to Mercury, but she's not as great a singer. Her talent is in her piano playing, her musical compositions, and her live stage performances.

Since her nudity bothers you (she's actually making a point with it and with her whole "hermaphrodite" thing, but a lot of people miss it), here's her with her clothes on. Not a very serious performance, but you'll get the idea. You still may not like her, but hopefully you'll see that your stripper comment is wrong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laIr_d0hFB8&feature=related

IIRC, she won't do a big show in a city without also doing a show at a gay venue.

If you're into the choreography and wacky costumes I guess there's something there, but musically...?

That was just as lip synched as the aborted Ashlee Simspon performance.

The difference is Gaga had competent techs behind the scenes, so she came off as an artiste, while Jessica's sis is still a punch line.

58. I agree AND disagree. First of all, Britney is no Madonna
and I am not even a huge Madonna fan, but she definitely deserves her place in music history, for the same reasons Elvis does: she saw some great things going on in music and presented them to a wider audience.

I think Lady Gaga has such a better voice than either is what makes her stand out. Saying she sounds like Madonna is like saying Styx is as good as Queen: nonsense. I don't think she's great, but I respect her voice, and her ability to go a bit further than what makes people comfortable.

61. exactly!
See my post above, how Madonna (and Elvis before her) were really good at presenting things which were at the time underground and making them presentable (somewhat) to a wider (whiter/straighter) audience.

And honestly, as a musician and a music/art lover, if people don't complain about your edgy art, and call you crappy names, then maybe you're not doing something right.

64. That's what my mother said about the Beatles.
"They just sound like everybody else out there to me." Just because you aren't versed in what she's doing doesn't mean she's not doing something.

She's acclaimed in her field, she's a student of music who attended New York University's music school, she started out as a songwriter before moving into performing. People who don't understand modern music want to trash her as a retread or sex-peddler, or whatever. But she knows what she's doing, why she's doing it, and she's very good at it.

Her name, by the way, is a tribute to Queen's "Radio Gaga," in case you're curious.

65. Hahaha... you really think there is something groundbreaking about her music?
"People who don't understand modern music want to trash her as a retread or sex-peddler, or whatever."

That's because she really is a retread. There is nothing new to her music or image that hasn't been going on for the past 25 years. From her costumes, to her sexualized lyrics, to her digitalized voice, to her electro-dance beats. Honestly, what is fresh about any of that? Pop music fans crack me up.

"But she knows what she's doing, why she's doing it, and she's very good at it."

You mean she stumbled upon the secret formula that attractive girl + stage show + pop pablum = big money? Wow! What a pioneer! So few have explored that route.

I thought only Republicans were proud of their ignorance. Knock yourself out. Hear what you want, die inside, let the world pass you by as you whine about how they just don't make them like Pat Boone anymore.

84. Hahaha... Pop fans are hilarious.
It's like hearing a McDonalds lover telling me I don't know what good food is. Or, hearing a Dean Koontz fan telling me I don't know what real literature is.

No one here dislikes her because she's so "cutting edge" or "sexualized". They dislike her because she's another mediocre act that went to the stale shit well and managed to dredge out another heaping bucket formulaic crap for tin-ear fans to gobble down.

93. No! She is fucking BRILLIANT! You're just old and bitter.
Her image is as "cutting edge" as wet cardboard. If y'all wanna listen to that dreck, have at it. Just don't try to pass it off as if some new boundary has been broken.

102. There are three main differences between pop fans and McDonalds fans IMO
1) Pop music isn't bad for you in large quantities
2) It can be proven that there is higher quality food than McDonalds, but in music, nothing can be proven - because what moves people varies
3) There are different kinds of pop. There's pop with craft like A Fine Frenzy and The Beatles, and IMO more empty pop like Nickelback and Hilary Duff.

I don't begrudge people for what they listen to. There is far more to argue about than a personal thing like music taste. I love pop but get in moods for something "profound" like Radiohead, something hard like Metallica, or relaxing classical music.

72. She obviously is if she has you so upset that you're wasting time putting her down
and has people calling her a whore/slut just because she has an element of theatre to her work.

And while we're at it, EVERY musician is building on the work of the past. EVERY ONE. Show me one original musician and I will laugh at you and make you feel dumb by showing you their antecedents.

85. I think you're confusing "upset" with "bored".
Because that is the reaction that most of the people knocking her in this thread feel. They are completely bored with her. They've heard her songs and seen her act a million times from 100 different performers in the past 20 years.

Sure, all artists rip each other off and use parts of other performers acts, but none, and I mean NONE, do it as blatantly, unrepentantly, and formulaicly as Pop artists. They are absolutely interchangeable.

94. you're boring me
you know, a lot of people find 60s Motown music boring for the same reasons, yet there is some amazing talent there on both sides of the soundboard. I personally am bored by noodle jazz and most masturbatory metal. If I want to hear scales, I'll listen to myself practice.

Ground breaking does not necessarily equal good, and pop does not necessarily equal bad.

And yes, ALL artists rip each other off as much as pop stars, they just pretend to be special about it, at least the ones without a sense of humor. Like I said, name me one original artiste and I will tell you exactly who they are ripping off. I listen to a lot of music in every genre, and while I don't know a lot of bands, I bet I could tell you where they're coming from.

Let me guess: you're a metal head aren't you?

71. Seriously.
I'm not sure which is worst: the "she has a dick" comments (as if that had anything to do with her shows or music), the "she's a slut/stripper/whore" bullshit that makes me wonder just when the comet will wipe us all out, or the "everything I don't like is total crap" bullshit.

I'm not even a huge fan, although I don't disrespect her - her voice and her stage shows, like Pink's, have a lot more going on than Britney or some other Disney product.

Britney isn't a Disney product. She was on the Mickey Mouse club years before she became a big star. Disney stars, like Miley, became big stars because of Disney.

Britney is a far better performer than Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga's performances come off forced and desperate....like she's trying so hard to be shocking. I also don't find her voice all that great. I do like Lady Gaga's music and I think she written some very good songs. That's her true talent. She's even written songs for Britney. I think Lady Gaga is too gimmicky and won't be around too long...although she may have a long song writing future.
