Did you have to clean your carpets/ floors afterwards? Thanks.

1. Hi Metta...
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 10:42 AM by LeftyFingerPop
I have used a duct cleaning service twice.

It will not put any dirt into the air, and you will not have to clean your carpets.

They will park a big truck in front of your home that has a huge vacuum in it.

They will then drill some holes into your ducts at strategic locations. These holes are about one inch in diameter, and they will later be plugged with plastic caps.

They insert wire brushes into the holes to loosen debris that is inside your ducts. They also go in with these brushes through the heat vents and cold air returns.

After they do this, they run a huge cloth hose from the truck vacuum to your ducts, and suck out everything that is in there.

All of the debris goes into the truck vacuum, and none of it will spill into the air.

You will be surprised how much crap will come out of your ducts.

Hope this helps...good luck.

4. Maybe I'll have that done here once I'm working again.
I've always wanted to get it done as I have seen the crud inside there. My ducts are also quite short and there's not attic, so they'll have to go through the registers.

Thank you, too, for that info. They can get mine done in half an hour then. Apartment living at its "finest" ;)

5. You're welcome, kentauros. One other thing...
It is my opinion that this field has more than a fair share of scammers.

Make sure you find out exactly what the person is going to do...ie: make sure he doesn't just hook up the vacuum to one of your registers for 5 minutes and then charge you $800. There should also be mechanical cleaning involved with the brushes, etc.

:hi:

7. I have had folks from the gas company here to service our old gas furnace
who told us that if you remove the registers and use a regular vacuum cleaner with a long tube, you will do as much good as the cleaning services. He also told me that the more expensive anti-allergy furnace filter I had installed was no better than the standard filters.

There is a lot of mythology involved and a lot of companies making money for essentially doing nothing useful.

8. Not really, but the prices were surprising
I get those mailers/ads that announce a price like 50% off - $74.95 or $49.95... but, then you'll see the fine print that says "returns extra" or "first 8 exchanges and 1 main duct" or similar.

And, by the time they total everything up, the price is like $500

9. I used one once: they simply had an enormous vacuum cleaner in their truck,
with a water filter, and vacuumed a lot of crap from my heating system: you could hear the pencils ans pebbles from the decades swooshing up and out. I had them vacuum out my drier tube, too. Cost something like a C-note. I probably plan to do it about once every ten years

10. An HVAC guy gave me some advice on duct cleaning
He said if they don't have brushes that actually have some sort of motion going on at the business end to knock off the dust sticking to the inside of your ducts so it gets sucked up, don't bother.
