16. My '02 was really buggy.
They are notorious for that. I suspect the '03s aren't much better. I have an '09 now that is really reliable. The '02 stopped running after it was rear-ended at a red light. No brake squeal or skidmarks. Just *wham*!

2. A friend of mine who loves German cars
and owned an old VW beetle until the early 90s (which he then replaced with a Mercedes diesel...) wouldn't buy any new VW stuff from the 80s going forward. He just thought they were crap. He's an electrical engineer, too, and did most of his own maintenance work on his cars.

10. My '88 VW Fox Wagon was my pride and joy
until I wrecked it. Standard shift, never any major problems, built like a tank but light and quick and oh-so-durable. I still miss it over a decade later.

My mechanic sold me an automatic '88 Jetta four-door sedan. I easily spent as much on repairing it for the next six years as I did on initially buying it.

If VW would build the Fox Wagon again, I would be sorely conflicted in getting it and trading in my Civic or keeping it until it falls apart. VW needs to go back to making those great wagons again :)

4. Oh noes! I love/loved my Jettas
We had an 01 Wagon that met its demise on an atlanta highway this summer...totaled while we were driving across country from WA to FL thanks to a hit and run :cries:

Now we have an 04 Turbo and an 06 2.5 I love both of them.

I'm sorry you hate your car. Nothing is worse than hating your car

5. I believe there is a 02-04 problem with some Jettas
you may have missed that cutoff.

I've owned this car outright for 3 years now. And in the last two years that I've owned it outright, the repair bills yearly have exceeded the amount I ever paid yearly in car payments.

Fuck it, not gonna be my problem in another week or so.

6. wow, that's just too bad
and I mean that sincerely. It's really awful when we hate our cars :( What are the problems you are having? The problems with our jettas have been cosmetic--the headliner in the 04 is coming down, and in the 01 and 06 the inside electrical (ceiling and floor lights, etc) goes wonky for a week or two, then is normal, then wonky, then normal.

8. VW are notorious for terrible electrical work
That said, I love my Passat 1.8 Turbo, even if the electrical system has a mind of its own.

9. I sold my '99 Golf when it hit 100k miles
because that's when the powertrain warranty expired.

wasn't driving a VW outside warranty, no way.

i loved driving that car, it was basically trouble free for me...then it started burning oil, not a horrendous amount, but a quart/1000 miles.

15. I had a 65 VW bug
some years ago. Floor rusted out, so when it rained, my feet were under water. I tried to get an inspection with a bicycle horn attached to the side mirror. (did NOT pass) Well, times have changed and I haven't had a VW since then.

Sorry about your Jetta. Hope it dies, for your sake. :)
