4. depends on the cultural reference, i guess each culture has its own taboos
whether thats racial, ethnic, geographical or even what job you are in that makes some jokes acceptable that wouldnt be elsewhere, classic example i know a lot of jokes that would be covered by teh first two replies to this thread.

15. I think that might be too strict
I don't think it is fair to make jokes about things where people have been innocently victimized (like rape, murder, etc..) unless you know that those jokes won't offend the target audience (for instance, it is more acceptable for black comedians to use the 'n' word then it is for Michael Richards to scream it). However, some jokes that offend people are necessary. Colbert's skewering of Bush- to his face- is a classic example of that. People need to be offended sometimes, it is acceptable to push boundaries sometimes, and if we didn't do that life would be a lot more dull.

11. So...
If someone's child is raped and killed by a psychopath, it is OK to joke about it to that person?

Nothing is too serious...What a dumbass thing to say...and that kind of thinking is rampant at DU.

18. humor is very subjective.
I think that part of a healing process is to be able to laugh and find humor in even the most devastating of situations. Well-crafted, while keeping the audience in mind is part of being able to do this. just my .02

19. Look at the person you are about to tell the joke to
If they have any of the attributes your joke references then you probably shouldn't say it.
If you are going to be video taped, you probably shouldn't say much.
