about this EOG thing....how do you explain to a kid that there is more
to school than that? The boy knows that if he does well on his EOG he goes on to the next grade. He rationalizes that report card grades no longer matter.

2. End Of Grade Testing
The kids take a test at the end of the year. If they do well, they pass regardless of what grades they have made throughout the year.

3. TY.
How does he expect to do well at the end of the year if he has poor grades throughout the year? Doesn't the exam cover the entire content of each course?

We don't have those in PA, but we do have a state-wide standardized test (the PSSA) that is given at the end of March. Of course, after that test, the year is over for them. They tend to blow off the last 9 weeks grading period.

4. He gets poor grades because, even though he understands the
subject matter, he loses his homework, forgets to do it, does it lackadasically....

He is only starting Jr High this year. I am hoping to make him understand that Colleges look at report cards not the EOG thing....

that is one angle. any more?

5. That's a terrible system.
Your son is right: apparently report card grades don't matter.

You need to try to focus his efforts on learning, as opposed to grades.

6. thanks
I hate it...teaching to the test. They need to learn real world skills and prepare for college.
