I've been given a huge honor and I don't want it...
My manager called me into his office the other day saying we needed to talk. I went up and he said that I had been given a huge honor. Already uneasy I asked what it was. He said that I was one of seven people in Wisconsin nominated for the Wisconsin Innkeeper's Association Employee of the Year.

I won the hotel's people pleaser award last year and it was very stressful as I'm not the type who likes accolades or to be in the spotlight (believe it or not I'm very shy).

So now I'm being told that I have to go on a 2 hour car trip (one way) with the General Manager, Food and Beverage Director and Human Resources Director to this award banquet.

I don't want to go. I told him so. Then he guilts me into it by saying how important it is and how I should be honored because I'm only one of seven, blah blah blah.

Sigh.

1. My dear WillBowden...
I am sorry you're in such a tight spot.

You must be awfully good at your job to keep getting these accolades...

Would he hold it against you if you insisted on not going?

Wish I could help!

3. Would he hold it against me?
I'm not sure. I do know that I would feel as though I let people down if I don't go. I'm not good on disappointing people.

And I don't know if I'm 'awfully good' at my job. I just want people to enjoy their stay with us and will do what it takes to make sure they do. (OK, the naked guy who was...um...touching himself when I went into the room was the exception, but still....)

be happy you have a job and especially one that recognizes your achievements - go along with it - it's an honor - just do it

4. Come kick my ass...
It might make it easier.

My problem is standing up in a room full of people I don't know. I get incredibly claustrophobic and can't breathe. It's all I can do to not run from the room. When I got the award from the hotel last year I don't remember much about it except I was incredibly embarrassed.

5. Ah, so you have trouble speaking before a group...
Many people do.

Do you have time to take a public speaking class, or sign up with Toastmasters to overcome this?

Because it can be overcome.

7. Nope. Happens on the 26th...
And if 45 years of life has taught me one thing - it's easier to run away than to face your fears. :P

8. It may be easier in the short term.
But it doesn't solve anything...

Just sayin'...

9. It is not a difficult thing to decide.
Will they have an open bar?

:)

Congratulations on your accomplishments.

And on that note, I saw a commercial that is just so great. It reminds me about accomplishments.

10. Open bar?
I don't know. I don't drink.

I am, however, amused at the commercial.

12. Go.
It could hurt your standing at work if you don't. Make your job less secure. Accept the award, get drunk and go home.

14. It's not all that...
You stand up, run really really fast to the front. Grab your item and try to hide in your chair and hope no one notices.

15. Congratulations, that is quite
an accomplishment. I know what you mean about getting up in front of crowds, but I suspect this is one public accolade that you can not avoid. Go up to the podium, and graciously accept the award. It can't take more than three minutes total, including walking up to the podium. We can do almost anything for three minutes.

Wishing you continued success.

18. You might consider talking to your MD about an Rx beta blocker
very very safe old medications, available as a $4 generic - millions take them for blood pressure, and many folks without hypertension take them for stage fright. No sense of intoxication or "high" - will allow you to keep a clear head without the pounding heart.

19. You can do this, and it will be good for you. Here's a crash course in cognitive therapy:
"It won't kill me."
"It won't kill me."
"It won't kill me."
"It won't kill me."
"It won't kill me."

Or, if you prefer a more nuanced approach:
"This is going to suck, but I can deal with it."
