Something scared my dog today so badly that she shook for more than an hour
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 10:26 PM by EFerrari
and I have no idea what it was. I went looking for Kid to take her into my office and found her hiding and shaking in a bathroom.

At first I thought something was biting her somewhere but there was nothing on her and she had no visible wounds. She was inside the house and there was no noise from the cats and no one else at home but me and Mom and Mom was on the phone in her office.

I called her to me and she wouldn't come. Eventually, she followed me into my office but she went under a work table and stayed there. After a while, she was able to lay down and nap.

She was still upset when she woke up about two hours later but ate a pretty normal dinner and seemed okay if tired on her walk this afternoon. She's still sort of watchful and it's been seven hours.

It wasn't a seizure. She was scared and trembling. Weird. Maybe we have a ghost only she can see? What was that?

1. My Jack Russell, Tollie, acts like that if there is a thunderstorm
headed this way.

She still has troubles from Katrina.

I don't know what could have caused your pup to act that way. Maybe a ghost.

I hope she is okay.

Sending hugs your way.

My babies send them to you and your baby too.

3. Thanks, merh! She's okay, just tired.
The cats run and hide in the closet when there is thunder or fireworks. There was nothing today -- we got a big storm yesterday but today was calm. I have to go with ghost.

6. Tollie pants and jumps at any noise before the storms head this
way, or before I realize there is bad weather on the way.

She prdicts it and gets all weird, panting and trying to attach herself to me.

8. I had a cat that predicted quakes. She really did run up the drapes.
This crew just hides and leaves me to fend for myself.

Kid is still barking at everything -- we've only been here for about 5 weeks. She barks at the horses when they get near the house, at Mom when she drives up to her parking space. She barks at the wild turkeys and the jack rabbits, at anyone approaching the pad where the house is in any way. If she's scared or nervous, she keeps it to herself and barks her head off instead.

11. Then it was a ghost or electricity.
Check the wires in the morning and if they all look okay, get her some holy water to carry in a little container on her collar.

21. Yeah. I'm out the family place for a while and sublet my condo.
There's six horses that board plus our two out here. Kid thinks they're big dogs. :)

7. Tollie never was, until she went through Katrina.
And it isn't just the thunder, all the noises and the pressure changes get to her. She gets all nervous and snarls at everything and pants like crazy. The panting noise is annoying as sin.

:hi:

2. Is there any way she could have gotten an electric shock?
I can't think of anything else that might have freaked her out so much.

Hope she's okay.

5. I'll have to go look and see if there's anything she could have tried to chew on
that's live. That's a good guess. I can't think of anything but will go look in the morning. She was in Mom's rooms.

She seems okay, just really, really tired.

The only other times she's trembled like this was when she was a puppy and only for a moment. Once she got scared because I made a puffing noise that she didn't recognize. And the other time, she thought the vacuum cleaner was going to eat her. That was short, too.

12. I'd be thinking earthquake
My dog also did something odd today, it was sometime around 5-6pm I think. I'm not even sure what it was but it was like a mini-freak out of some sort.

You're not in California are you?

:shudder:

15. I am and about 75 feet away from the closest fault. It's a little one
that runs through the ranch. It did feel like "earthquake weather" today. :scared:

13. how do you know it wasn't a seizure?
You weren't with her just prior to finding her shaking. Right? So she could have had one and then was exhausted and disoriented.

14. Mostly because she wasn't disoriented.
I had an epileptic cat and you could usually tell when Gizzy had a seizure because she was a little confused or clumsy.

16. You are right by the ocean and the waves were huge today
down in Pacifica they were crashing over the wall at Rockaway Beach.

that's the kind of thing a dog near the beach will hear or feel from inside a house.

17. Actually, I'm up in the San Jose East Foothills for a while
with the family.

There is a lot of environmental noise around here, though. More than you'd think. The neighbors like their guns and chainsaws and V-8s. And there's always some critter passing through. It funny that the beach is quieter than these hills -- it wasn't that way ten years ago. :)

Any unexplainable marks or scars on your body?

Maybe the Greys scared her.

22. About three hours -- arm wrestling with Comcast after the storm
that bumped us off line. Comcast wanted us to call Gateway because it *must* be our equipment. The bastards. We mysteriously got back on line about 2pm yesterday. I guess they forgot to send their facilities trouble reports to their Call Center in Mumbai. :grr:

29. At least you got to talk to a human.
When something goes wrong with my AT$T line, I have to wade through an automated "trouble report" phone menu, then just hope that somebody's actually paying attention.

23. Bad dream?
My SO gets those and is shook up for some time after, although granted, he isn't a dog.

Otherwise I vote for a search for chewed cords/wires or sockets.

I think she hears imaginary rats because the other dogs just look at her with the WTF look.

27. My cat once woke from a sound sleep with a terrible yowl and went flying across the room in fear.
I can only think she must have had a nightmare. Freaked her the heck out, whatever it was. She was jittery for a while after that too. Well, it's happened to me, who's to say it doesn't happen to them?

30. How about a sore back? My dog had that happen.
She somehow hurt her back (she used to like to jump a lot). We couldn't find out anything at first. Even the vet couldn't tell, with x-rays. Eventually, she improved a lot (for a while she wasn't even climbing stairs) and we've pretty much got her to not jump so much. I worry it could happen again, but so far, so good. The pain itself scared her. She was shaking and scared for a couple of weeks. She didn't even want us to lift her onto the bed - I slept on the floor with her for a few nights.
