Why the hell would they do something like that? Weren't there any good films made in the 30s?

I watched about 20 minutes of one staring Wheeler and Woolsey, and it was bad enough to make me want to invent a time machine just so I could go back and prevent these two hacks from meeting.

The film was Caught Plastered dating from 1931.

It was so bad that I can't believe that they allowed Hollywood to keep making films after that.

And while I"m on the subject, why the hell is IFC running Good Guys Wear Black?!? Is that an independent film?

1. AMC shows worse crap.
I'd kill to have TMC in my cable package. Instead, I have shitty AMC. I can't tell you how many times I've flipped it and they were showing crap like "The Beast Must Die".

2. For that matter, as good as "Mad Men" is, I don't know why it's on American MOVIE Classics
Or whatever the hell AMC is supposed to stand for.

You were lucky to catch The Beast Must Die, though; usually they run the 1980s war documentary Commando about 60 or 70 times each week.

3. They've pretty much rendered every word in their name meaningless.
The movies don't have to be American (ex. The Beast Must Die)

The programming doesn't have to be Movies (ex. Mad Men)

The movies definitely don't have to be Classics (ex. The Beast Must Die)

They might as well call themselves "Meh... Watch If You Feel Like It."

5. That is like The History Channel showing a show called Ice Road Truckers.
What does Ice Road Truckers have to do with history?

7. Nothing. Mindless pap, like most tv. And extremely boring tv after
about 10 minutes.

4. I watched the one just before that.
Hook, Line and Sinker or somethin' like that. It was sooooooooo awful that we laughed a lot. Like a cheap imitation of the Marx Bros.

I don't think it's wrong to show some stinkers now and then, for purposes of comparison.

6. I can't believe you don't know why they do that??!! They do it
because, based on how good it is, is how much they pay to run it. Those are free. Why pay money when you can get it free? Therefore, cheap, crappy, no fee films.

8. Isn't it, to a degree, a study in film history too?
I don't get TCM. But it sounds really interesting, even if they show dreck occasionally.

10. of course
That's why I love TCM, and I applaud their showing of old B-grade movies. That one I saw last night was a real stinker, and it was good for a lot of laughs.

13. I find those films fascinating for just that reason.
There's a very interesting little film from the very early 1930s called Wild Boys of the Road that they're offering on-demand. It's about teens going on the run in search of jobs as the depression hits their families. I wish more channels ran little films of the 30s-70s.

14. No, it can't be that simple
Tons of old movies are in the public domain; there's no reason to scrape the bottom of the shit bucket to fill airtime.

They only reason they ran those awful movies is because they wanted to run those old movies.

Sure, there's an argument to be made for their place in film history, but I don't know that this justifies 12 consecutive hours of airtime. One per night (perhaps between 3:00am and 4:00am) would do just fine!
