Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush-Don't give up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJWurqWTeSk

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
Ive changed my face, Ive changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Dont give up
cos you have friends
Dont give up
Youre not beaten yet
Dont give up
I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
Never thought I could be affected
Thought that wed be the last to go
It is so strange the way things turn

Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Dont give up
You still have us
Dont give up
We dont need much of anything
Dont give up
cause somewhere theres a place
Where we belong

Rest your head
You worry too much
Its going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Dont give up
Please dont give up

got to walk out of here
I cant take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That rivers flowing
That rivers flowing

Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs

Dont give up
cause you have friends
Dont give up
Youre not the only one
Dont give up
No reason to be ashamed
Dont give up
You still have us
Dont give up now
Were proud of who you are
Dont give up
You know its never been easy
Dont give up
cause I believe theres the a place
Theres a place where we belong

33. James Taylor and Carly Simon "Close Your Eyes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_D0i7UC9UY&feature=related

Well the sun is surely sinking down
But the moon is slowly rising
So this old world must still be spinning round
And I still love you

(chorus)
So close your eyes
You can close your eyes, its all right
I dont know no love songs
And I cant sing the blues anymore
But I can sing this song
And you can sing this song
When Im gone

It wont be long before another day
We gonna have a good time
And no ones gonna take that time away
You can stay as long as you like

- chorus -

Loving Arms - Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge

http://www.youtube.com/v/NCE2XIW2-O4&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b

If you could see me now. The one who said that you'd rather roam
The one who said you'd rather be alone
If you could only see me now

If I could hold you now
Just for a moment, if I could really make you mine
Just for a while, turn back the hands of time
If I could only hold you now

Chorus:
I've been too long in the wind
Too long in the rain
Taking any comfort that I can
Looking back and longing for
The freedom of my chains
Lying in your loving arms again

If you could hear me now
Singing somewhere through the lonely nights
Dreaming of the arms that held me tight
If you could only hear me now

Repeat chorus
I can almost feel your loving arms again

13. Simon & Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwldn3ET53E

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing of sparrow on snowcrested brown)
Without no seams nor needle work
(Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strands
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather
(War bellows blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

How when I pull up clips on modern Japanese music, the response is to post something out of the 1950s... I know no one keeps up with whats going on culturally in Japan now.. which is why the song "Sukiyaki" keeps popping up in response to each post I put up of a new modern Japanese song.

Though all that stuff was good.. I just wish people would grasp the idea that there is new stuff coming out of Japan now.. and a lot of it is still worth watching and listening too.

35. Sorry you didn't like it
but I do like "The Peanuts", thanks to online music blogs like Beware of the Blog, UbuWeb, and weirdomusic.com. So, don't assume we're all posting a counterpoint just to be funny. I am fully aware of new and good music from Japan. That Peanuts clip is about the only one I can find on youtube. I'd rather find some of their folk music without all the monster-movie stuff.

Although not from Japan, this half-Japanese band could probably play there without a problem:

But the pattern to my postings seem to be the same... I put up some great song ..and someone pulls up something out of the 1950s.. Okay, so the classical stuff is great, but I really want people to see that, yes.. there is some talent in Japan worth paying attention too.. and I would like to think, I am not the only one paying attention to what is coming out of Japan recently.

Like this for example:

Perfume

40. To each their own, I guess.
I gave it a listen and it reminds me too much of anime pop, though it does have a better quality. I do like classical music from Japan, especially the music of the shakuhachi.

Here's a blog that seems to have good taste in almost any kind of music you can think of: Free Albums Galore. I can't link directly to a search I did for "Japan" but there's a good representation of styles.

One that came up for jazz sounds pretty good, from what little I can find on youtube: Aerotrio
Also: http://freealbums.blogsome.com/2007/06/20/aerotrio-aerotrio/

Bump Foot appears to be a good source for netlabel artists from Japan, too :)

ASAKUSA JINTA

I know these guys.. I met them at Japan Nite a few years back and got to chat with MieKachint
shes very fun to talk to and enjoyed her USA visit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elMlmNYgJ4Y

ASAKUSA JINTA Members :
Oshow: Vocals & Double Bass
Shinya: Guitars
MieKachint: Soprano & Alto Saxophone
B-Ken: Euphonium & Tuba
Seasir: Trumpet
Kaname: Drums

ASAKUSA JINTA is a hard marching band from Asakusa in Tokyo, Japan; they call themselves Asianican Hard Marching Band. Their music style is a mixture of Rockabilly, uptempo country, punk and Japanese Eenka and Kayokyoku from the 1930's. Their base is Asakusa, Tokyo's old downtown, an area reminiscent of traditional Japan. They love this town and people who live there love the band as they are known as a marching band playing on the shopping streets or for weeklong parades. Asakusa Jinta's music theme is joy and sorrow of life and "Giri and Ninjo", the spirit of traditional Japanese emotions such as sympathy, compassion, love and friendship. They are playing a style of music from the 1930s - actually it's more like a '30s brass band that plays in many different styles. Some songs are like uptempo country or rockabilly, but most of it is just frenetic klesmer. Just saxophones, trumpet and euphonium all playing lightning fast happy melodies while stand-up bass and drums and tubas throw down polka-style rhythms. The Hawaiian shirts and vaguely lounge-lizard outfits adds the finishing touch to this eccentric band.

55. ORE SKA BAND!!!
Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 08:59 PM by AsahinaKimi

I got to see these girls when they were here for the Japan Nite...this is another favorite Ska band and they are well
known on the Ska band circuit. The funny thing was they started as a High School girls band..

Here is one of their songs Pinocchio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxWzhUq5H3o

from Wiki:
Ore Ska Band (オレスカバンド, Oresukabando?) is an all-female ska band from Sakai, Japan. They have released two full albums in Japan, Ore in July 2006, and WAO!! in May 2007, as well as a self-titled compilation album for a US release, Oreskaband. They have performed in Japan, Canada and the United States, including the Fuji Rock Festival. Their songs have been featured as the 14th ending theme for the anime Naruto and the 11th ending theme for the anime Bleach.

The band name, "ore ska band," literally translates as "we're (a) ska band". While "ore" is normally an extremely masculine and casual way to say "I" in Japanese and the suffix "-tachi" is added to personal nouns when emphasizing that they are plural, it's clear in this context that "ore" means something more along the lines of "we fellows". The choice of "ore" is also one of gender play, as the band usually appear wearing boys' school uniform in their videos and concerts.

Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight
I'm gonna open up your gate
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
And how she gave me life
And how she made it end
Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight

Flowers growing on a hill, dragonflies and daffodils
Learn from us very much, look at us but do not touch
Phaedra is my name

Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight
I'm gonna open up your gate
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
And how she gave me life
And how she made it end
Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight

Flowers are the things we know, secrets are the things we grow
Learn from us very much, look at us but do not touch
Phaedra is my name

Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight
Flowers growing on a hill
I'm gonna open up your gate
dragonflies and daffodils
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
Learn from us very much
And how she gave me life
look at us but do not touch
FADE
And how she made it end

I absolutely love this song. I don't know anybody who feels the same way, though.

Jeebus, got the title wrong! Corrected!

One Too Many Mornings
By Bob Dylan

Down the street the dogs are barkin'
And the day is a-gettin' dark.
As the night comes in a-fallin',
The dogs 'll lose their bark.
An' the silent night will shatter
From the sounds inside my mind,
For I'm one too many mornings
And a thousand miles behind.

From the crossroads of my doorstep,
My eyes they start to fade,
As I turn my head back to the room
Where my love and I have laid.
An' I gaze back to the street,
The sidewalk and the sign,
And I'm one too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.

It's a restless hungry feeling
That don't mean no one no good,
When ev'rything I'm a-sayin'
You can say it just as good.
You're right from your side,
I'm right from mine.
We're both just one too many mornings
An' a thousand miles behind.
