Today's College Football Thread (Red River Rivalry Edition)
Edited on Sat Oct-17-09 10:50 AM by fishwax
So there are several great games today, but the highlight (for me) is the first: OU-Texas, the Red River Rivalry, which is the greatest rivalry game in college football, always played at the Cotton Bowl in the center of the Texas State Fair, with the stadium split down the middle--Texas fans north of the 50-yard line and Oklahoma fans south of it. I don't like watching this game start at 11 am, when many of the fans are still reeling from partying in the West End the previous night, but it's still great fun. :)

Some other games of note today:

Early Games
Oklahoma vs. Texas
Iowa at Wisconsin

Afternoon Games
Arkansas at Florida
USC at Notre Dame
Minnesota at Penn State
Texas Tech at Nebraska

Evening/Night Games
Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech
South Carolina at Alabama
Illinois at Indiana (The loser of this game might well go winless in the Big 10)

Nightcaps
Utah at UNLV
Washington at Arizona State

So who does your team play today? What games are you looking forward to?

2. Go Devils!!
:woohoo:

@Home against the Huskies and it's FINALLY on a TV Channel I have. :woohoo: :woohoo:

ASU still has the top ranked defense in the Pac-10 so if Sullivan comes ready to play it should be a win.

:woohoo:

I also will be rooting for Colorado State over TCU

:woohoo:

The Rams started 3-0 but had back-to-back deflating losses to Idaho by 2 pts and Utah at home by 7.

Go Devils, Go Rams.

:woohoo:

10-6 now, but CSU is moving the ball with about two minutes left in the half.

"Because it is the birthplace of me(Fort Collins) vs my mom's birthplace (Fort Worth)."

Nothing against Ft. Worth, exactly, but I'd say you got the better end of that bargain :)

6. nah ... BOOMER SOONER!
But seriously, I was just thinking this morning that one of the things I like about this game is that, rivalry aside, it gives democrats from red states a chance to get together -- I remember OU Democrats and the Texas student democrat group campaigning for Gore at the fair outside the game in 2000, and I assume they probably did the same for Obama last year :woohoo:

And I've got to admit that's a cool pic :)

9. Overall, I think this rivalry is great for a number of reasons
From my personal experience, OU fans are very nice and fun to be around and the few players I've met over the years were great. Once the game is over, everyone (with the exception of a small number of idiot fans on both sides) is friendly. This is not the case between UT and A&M. I also like that we meet half way every year for the game. I think meeting in a nuetral spot helps to keep things civil.

****

Damn. Bradford is hurt. Rivalry or not, I hate to see that.

12. I'm happy to hear that
I agree about the fans (though I think we might be in the minority in thinking that way). But I've met some great Texas fans, and had a great time talking football and the rivalry with them. There have been some especially memorable jerks I've met, too, but as you said they're a small number overall, and I know there are some among my fellow Sooner fans as well.

I've heard some folks older than me talk about the 70s, when perhaps the rivalry had more bad blood, but the last ten years have been good to both programs and to the rivalry as a whole. :toast:

"Damn. Bradford is hurt. Rivalry or not, I hate to see that."
Looks like he's still in pain, but maybe it's not as bad as the injury in the BYU game. At least he's not in the locker room yet ...

31. I agree ...

I went to every game for about 10 years, and I never had a problem with fans, not even close to a problem. The same cannot be said of the OU - OSU games I attended.

I still remember the first OU-TX game I attended. OU lost, barely. It was one of those very tight games (sort of like this one so far) that can make you crazy. When it was over, OU fans were understandably distraught and Texas fans jubilant. There was some taunting going on, yes, but nothing seemed to get out of hand. Later that evening my friends and I went to dinner. I was feeling defiant, so I continued to wear my OU shirt. As we sat down to eat, we started talking about the game, sort of in an analytical way. Eventually, a gentleman at the table next to us heard what we were talking about and decided to join in the discussion. He was a Texas fan. Before long both our tables were in a rousing, but friendly debate.

And when our check came, the guy who had first talked to us took it from our table and paid for it. Steak dinners, four of them, with a none-too-small beer tab. We tried to protest, but he would have none of it. I'll always remember that guy.

4. Hooray for TXOU weekend!
Edited on Sat Oct-17-09 11:13 AM by justabob
We love to hate TXOU weekend here in Dallas. :) I don't care much about the game/rivalry itself, but I am glad all my coworkers are making good money today. (restaurant biz) TXOU weekend is going to save the month for a lot of waiters I know and work with.

PS. I have to ask.... when was the last time you went to the game? I used to work in the West End - several TXOUs back in the 90s. Crazy times. I ask because the West End is more or less a ghost town these days, a shadow of its former self. The focus has shifted over to the AA Center a few blocks over, and elsewhere, so it is a little different these days.

And PPS:

I think this year is the last year for the Cotton Bowl. If I am not mistaken, the game is moving over to the new Cowboy Stadium in Arlington. This is unfortunate for Fair Park and the State Fair and Dallas generally. I asked one of the resident sports gurus at work yesterday about the stadium situation and he said it wasn't definite yet, but I'd swear I heard Cowboy's Stadium was going to be the place.

8. They talked about moving the game, but the current contract runs through 2015
The Cotton Bowl game is moving, but OU-Texas is staying in the Cotton Bowl for now, last I heard :)

Sad to hear that about the West End -- It's been several years since I've been to the game (I guess 2003 was the last one I went to), and there was quite a big crowd there then. Alas ...

11. good
We were talking at work and no one was *sure* which game it was that was firm in moving... the Cotton Bowl Classic (whatever the New Year's Day game is) or the TXOU game. I am sorry to see either of them go.

Re the West End: Yeah, It has been dying a slow death since the AA Center opened. The whole West End Marketplace building is closed. Most of the restaurants have moved across the underpass to Victory Park or closed. I worked at the On the Border down there off and on for over 7 years. It was very sad when the place shut down last year.

Other than the one big play they gave up to Murray on the first drive, they've held pretty well, even though the offense hasn't given them much rest.

But the Texas offense hasn't had any answers yet ...

22. yeah, injuries have been a problem all year
Bradford in the first game and now again; Gresham, the best TE in the country, lost for the season the week before it started; Broyles, the team's best WR, just came back for this game, and that's just at the offensive skill positions. Most games have been like this, with injuries in the game of varying severity. I'm not sure why it's been like that, but it's been a rough year for injuries.

28. they've had first half struggles before though, and come out of it
But I guess in most of those cases they were beating themselves in the first half and simply fixed their mistakes in the 2nd half. I don't think they've played a defense quite this fast or playing quite this well.

Should be an nerve-wracking second half all the way around (insert nail-biting smiley here).

43. Not completely (a shock)
They nearly beat Oregon on the road in the pouring rain at Midnight (West coast time, think of how that affects a mid-America team). They scored on the last play of the game but failed on a two point conversion. Also Notre Dame needed a last second score to beat Purdue as well.

I didn't say great but you can count on them to produce a very good running team, Michael "The Burner" Turner for example, and even though they have no MAC Championships in the last 20 years they have been very close. They also gave Wisconsin a run for their money.

Anyways NIU is my favorite team from the MAC so I felt the need to defend them. :)

54. well, I certainly won't flame you for that
I don't think they're as good this year as they've been in some years past, but you're right, and I didn't mean that so much as a knock against NIU as a knock against Purdue, which (near misses against a then-reeling Oregon and an, imo, over-rated Notre Dame team aside) hadn't shown many signs of playing in the Buckeyes' league this year ...

57. You're probably right
I don't catch many NIU games so it's hard to evaluate them but when I do it's usually the last game of the season at home in cold windy weather that usually decides the MAC West Champion that they end up losing by a close score. (Last year it was against Ball St in the snow and HEAVY fog where you could barely see the game).

I give Purdue props for the Oregon game even though they lost because it was late, the game ended shortly past midnight west coast time which is probably 2 in the morning for what they're used to and Autzen is a very difficult place to play for any team. One of the loudest stadiums in the country and they came up short by two points.

The first was to replace these signs:

51. well, part of their excuse is that they played against a really good defense
Even though OU has lost three games this year, they've only given up 53 points in 6 games, including today. I think that Texas has had concerns about their running game all year, and today when they matched up against a solid defense some of their problems became clear. They certainly have some things to work on, but they probably won't face a better defense this year than what they saw today.

I'm pretty disappointed with the end result, I've got to admit, but even so, congrats to your Longhorns :toast:

84. Interesting So Cal angle
Jimmy Clausen, ND QB, played high school ball here at the local football powerhouse Oaks Christian.
So did half the USC defense.

4th quarter, 1 minute left ND 7 down, GREAT catch inside the 30. The game's afoot!

123. Broncos were my favorite team with Jake Plummer
Edited on Sat Oct-17-09 08:15 PM by JonLP24
Call me a bandwagoner but I was fully on the Broncos shipBroncos were always my #2 team due to my roots to Colorado) when they had Jake Plummer. I came across an interesting stat that Plummer has the highest percentage of career games that were 4th qtr comebacks. Around 17%. In fact the very first time he played in the NFL was on the road in Philadelphia, he led the Cardinals 98 yards to take the lead late in the 4th qtr which Philadelphia tied at the end of regulation. In Overtime Plummer had an intentional grounding call which put them at a 3rd and long and couldn't convert. You should have also seen the Arizona State vs UCLA the previous year as well. :wow: I thought for sure ASU would lose that game.

Also you got to consider Arizona had a non-existent running game and playing from behind all the time will lead to bad stats. Compare the numbers between Arizona and Denver and you will see the difference. Anyways I could go on and on but he was one of my all time favorite players.

And the Bible verse eyeblack takes ostentatious self-righteousness to a whole new level.

It took Tejada's meltdown AND some world-class crooked officiating for Jesus Christ Superstar to pull this off, but the bloviators on CBS and ESPN will still make him sound like the second coming of Johnny Unitas (he's actually the second coming of Kliff Kingsbury).

But it's 17-17 with 3:50 left. This team can't last if the offense continues to play this poorly. Groza award winner is trying to kick field goals with an injured groan and is not making them, that's 2 field goals 23 points. Also Kyle Williams fumbled in the endzone that's 30 points. Sullivan is missing throws by a mile. *sigh*

135. It was a good, crazy game
The first half had a combined 16 penalties for the first game. It was too close to comfort and Arizona State dominated them in the running game and really should have had a big lead. They got the win though and that's all that matters. Hopefully soon this defense starts attracting some national attention because they played really good. For example (first half) Huskies were driving, Burfict intercepts Locker's pass but a penalty away from the ball negated that so they give the ball back to the Huskies. Very next play a CB intercepts Locker's pass this happened in the red zone just to give you an idea.

I thought for sure BlooinBloo would show as I was here talking about the game to myself. :silly:
