Your Saturday afternoon math story problem:
Dried chickpeas cost $7.20/kg. A kilogram has 3640 calories. How do you find out how much 100 calories of chickpeas cost?

First prize is a tub of virtual hummus.

1. Divide 7.20 by 364?

2. ?
Sorry, I know I'm being impossibly thick here.

So to get grams/100cal you divide 3640/10 or 100? (which? why?) Where does the 364 come from?

And then you divide the price/kg by the g/100 cal?

Can you talk me through the formula in terms of what is being divided into what? I have to write an excel formula for this and it's making my brain melt.

10. Sorry. I would have to chop off six of my fingers to solve that.
I am not very good at the math, you see.

5. Oh, that's easy -
7.20 $/kg * 1/3640 kg/calories * 100 calories = some number in the form of $.
