It's wonderful. As many times as I've seen it, I'm impressed that it holds my attention for hours. Both Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones have something that I find remarkably attractive (in a purely fantasy kind of way). I've never been a rabid Western fan; I tend to like the Indian-centric ones. But this is just good storytelling.

2. "Red River"

Best Western ever, as far as I'm concerned. Although I do love "Lonesome Dove," particularly Robert Duvall's shoot-out with the Bad Guys on the Llano Estacado.....

3. We don't rent pigs!
In my opinion, that book is the best piece of historical fiction in the 20th century. As far as the movie goes, often movies never compare to the book-- but, that was some of the finest casting I have ever seen. It's outstanding!

btw-- I have met:

Sunset Carson
Lash LaRue
Jennifer Holt
Clayton Moore.

;)

Love westerns!

5. "Lonesome Dove" is my favorite too
I also recommend "Unforgiven". Eastwood's final western is a classic parable on the consequences of violence, with one of the characters expressing genuine remorse over killing someone who wasn't even a sympathetic character. Eastwood's character only acted violent when extremely drunk - and had experienced years of sobriety and peaceful redemption before he temporarily reverted to his violent past ways. You can find yourself torn between wanting him to get revenge, and at the same time, recognizing the futility and immorality of his actions.

Great script, wonderful casting, beautiful photography and superb direction.

9. Good answers, all! I should see Unforgiven again.
I'd forgotten that Capt. Call could make me burst into tears with just one word. "Augustus." Jones must have a thing for hauling people back to be buried. He did The Three Burials of Melquaides Estrada too. Another pretty cool movie.

even his old "B" westerns. I really grew up watching westerns on tv.

25. Where to begin...
I don't have that basic affection for Westerns that will make me want to seek out anything with horses (possibly because I was born in the late '70s, after the heyday of the modern Western).

I tend to like atypical/postmodern Westerns, like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

The "Man With No Name" films are endless fun.

I don't like goofy, unrealistic popcorn B Westerns, but, strangely, I do like goofy, unrealistic popcorn A Westerns like Rio Bravo and Silverado.

I also like cynical/fantastical '70s Westerns like Little Big Man and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

Deadwood is my favorite TV Western.

Jeremiah Johnson is a favorite of mine, because it convincingly asserts that there is beauty and nobility in hacking a modest life out of an unforgiving wilderness, an idea that's totally foreign to me.

Michael Mann's Last of the Mohicans is very compelling, and I'm intrigued by its roots in a sort of ur-Western style.
