Yeah, dumb. who cares about clean beaches, well maintained highways, low gas prices (and we don't pump) and being within short driving distance from ocean, mountains and major cities.

They're right. NJ sucks. :sarcasm: Don't blame them for not wanting to come here.

7. I can't think of the last time someone here insulted Maine, except maybe through
their annoyance over the electoral college or Olympia Snowe having too much power in the healthcare debate. But those are reasonable issues and not really complaints.

I do notice that Texas, Florida, and other southern states get slammed a lot. :( Like it's our fellow DUers fault that the state has problems, or that they haven't moved away? I mean jeez, some people can't afford to, others want to be near their families, and some don't want to give up the good fight.

It's my home state. I've lived here all of my life, save two years in Connecticut, from age 5 to 7. I was too young to appreciate it, other than the snow, and too young to hate the snow ;)

I think there are some people that just "love to hate". I don't understand how you can go through life like that, but they manage somehow. From experience, I'd say Texas is at the top of the heap of the most hated at DU.

I've been to every blue state on the map and lived in some of them. There isn't one of them I'd rather live in compared to Texas. The cost of living is low, the economy is stable, the weather is nice, and the culture is rich and diverse.

:D

I agree with everything there, too. Although I'm out of work at the moment, the economy here is better than the rest of the country. You really can't tell much difference than normal by the amount of traffic still on the roads during the week ;)

And this summer was wonderful! No hurricanes in the gulf, or none that did much of anything. That's the only aspect of our weather that I do not look forward to, whether staying for a "mild" one or having to evacuate from the big ones. Not the kind of weather system I would wish on anyone, even the haters.

35. Yep, makes more sense not to go outside and freeze or get lost in a blizzard, I guess. We have
a lot of different architecture here.

There are colonials, and hip-roofed Georgian style homes, Greek revival, the farm houses such as you mentioned, mansard roof homes, bungalows, and one of my faves the Cape Cod, which is what my Nana's house is. It was built right around the time of the Revolutionary War by my 6th(?) great grandfather and has been in the family ever since.

19. I grew up in and still live near, Detroit, Michigan.
I don't get offended when people
talk trash about MY city or state.

We are in TROUBLE.

The things people say about my area
are GENERALLY TRUE. No one likes to
be painted with the broad-brush, but
I don't understand people who get bent
out of shape about it.

Florida, for instance, sucks as bad
as Michigan, but for different reasons.

Texas sucks, too.

I don't happen to care for religious nuts
calling the shots politically, which is
why I generally avoid the south. It's also
too *ucking hot down there.

We have racism and poverty up here, and
cold winters.

28. There's a difference in recognizing where you live has problems...
...and one's own personal taste as weather, scenery, accents, regional culture/mannerisms, etc.

The latter is all entirely subjective. Florida may be too hot and humid for some people, but for me I don't mind it at all. Likewise, I couldn't imagine living in Minnesota or Alaska and having to spend winters there, but people there might not mind it and hey, power to them.

It's really no different when we argue over musical groups or singers. What is great art to some may not be to others.

Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 11:57 AM by Moondog
is like telling a woman that she has a really ugly baby.

People don't react well to being told things like that even if it is true, and people who say things like that are being insufferably rude.

What fascinates me about this phenomenon is that these very same people then act like they don't understand why you wouldn't just work your living heart out to elect whoever _their_ favorite candidate is, in _your_ sucky, backwards state.

The stupidity of this is utterly mind boggling.

aside from that being a very IRONIC statement,
I would understand that maybe they don't like

We all have our negatives.

I wouldn't think it was RUDE.

from the Boston area. I just couldn't stand the cold and that everything was gray for about half the year. Gray sky, gray snow, gray houses, gray skin tones (mine anyway). I love the warmth of Florida and that it's green year-round. Come October, I am ready for cooler temps, though. Politics are getting bluer and I surround myself with politically like-minded people. I don't mind people bashing Florida - I do it myself sometimes, when I encounter teabagger types, but then I remember that they're probably not native Floridians either.

But I love my state--I mean, the scenery, the flora and fauna (even the kudzu).

I'd rather live where it isn't so effing humid, but it just isn't practical AT ALL for me to pick up and move. I'm close to 60, and my relatives all live here.

If I were married and/or had kids to all pick up and move to (hot, but it's a dry heat) state, that would be a different matter.
If I had a retirement income or a job waiting for me in said (hot, but it's a dry heat) state, that would be a different matter.

And if my aunts had balls, she'd be my uncle.
