My Grandmother is back in the hospital again..GRAPHIC
She woke up with a sore on her toe early this morning and by the time her visiting nurse got there, the infection covered 2/3'rd of the toe. The visiting nurse made arrangements for my Grandmother to see her DR right away.

The DR took one look at the wound and I could tell by the look on his face that it was not good. He BARELY touched the wound and a stream of puss and blood squirted across the room. The DR said he needed to talk to his boss. He came right back with two syringes and said, I am going to give you these two shots and I want you to go straight to the ER.

I drove her to the ER, they did triage and we waited until they could find a bed. My Aunt came by after work and relieved me of "Grandma duties".

I just got off the phone with my Aunt. The infection grew 8 inches and was headed towards her knee. But they got her on IV anti-biotics and she is comfortable. We still have yet to find out if they will need to amputate or not. This will be the third toe she has lost to diabetes since she was diagnosed. Diabetes is an insidious disease :-(

1. My dear Roon...
I'm so glad they acted quickly...

I hope she keeps the toe, but you never know with diabetes...

I'm sorry, sweetie...

5. Oh Roon I do hope
that everything goes well. Diabetes is an awful disease. My daughter was dx'ed Type 1 almost 3 years ago at age 9 and I hate it. It does such horrible things to the body, and she is on a lot of insulin to get her number in check. Her problem is just puberty right now and that is a trial for the body itself without other things.

I am praying for you and your grandmother to make it through this without any major complications.

The only time I saw something spread so quickly was when I had the shingles. That was 20 years ago.

I am just here for them. Wish I was a better cook so I can feed my Grandfather, but he is doing OK with frozen food. :sigh:..I KNEW we should have put in the ramps when we had the chance. Now we are probably going to have to wait until spring.

..

edited, because I hadn't read the whole thread.
So sorry they had to amputate, this will probably
give a better chance of clearing up the infection.

best wishes for your dear Grandmother.

 for you Roon.
