A married detective was sent home in disgrace from an undercover Scotland Yard investigation in the Caribbean after having an affair with a blonde divorcee.
The officer's cover was blown when he was thrown fully-clothed into water at a pool party hosted by his secret lover in the Cayman Islands.
His mistress, Julie Karner, 51, thought he was a property developer called Simon Phelan.
But after examining his sodden wallet, she found his police badge and discovered his real name was Simon Ashwin, a detective inspector attached to Scotland Yard's elite Directorate of Professional Standards.
The farcical incident is the latest scandal to engulf the Met's so-called Sunshine Squad, which has run up a bill of more than £5million during a bungled two-year inquiry into alleged corruption in the Caymans' tiny police force.
The antics of 45-year-old Ashwin did not impress Yard chiefs, who booted him off the inquiry and posted him to a police station in West London.
