Hey, I also need help identifying a song/artist....
It's about 10-15 years old and they used to play it on our local Pacifica station fairly frequently.

It's by a male singer-songwriter, somebody like Robert Earle Keene or Billy Joe Shaver or Steve Earle or somebody and the chorus has lyrics like "I'm the track beneath the train, I'm the road under the car, I'm the lock upon the door" etc etc .

Note: I've looked up all three singers listed above and Googled "Track, train, road, car, door" etc etc and have not found it yet.

Any help?

1. Is it "Change the Locks" by Tom Petty?

Edited to add: It's actually a Lucinda Williams song, but Tom recorded a version of it in the mid-1990's.

2. That doesn't seem to go with
the train lyrics at all.

3. "I changed the tracks underneath the train/So you can't find me again"
A little bit misheard but I think that's what Richardo is looking for.

4. BINGO!!! "changed" is the key
Thanks so much, EastTenn, I can stop obsessing. It wasn't Petty's version I remember though.

I love those lyrics, you'd think I'd have remembered them better

5. Glad to help. Let me know when you come across the version you like.
I love both Lucinda's and Tom's.

I changed the lock on my front door so you can't see me anymore
And you can't come inside my house, and you can't lie down on my couch
I changed the lock on my front door

I changed the number on my phone so you can't call me up at home
And you can't say those things to me that make me fall down on my knees
I changed the number on my phone

I changed the kind of car I drive so you can't see me when I go by
And you can't chase me up the street, and you can't knock me off of my feet
I changed the kind of car I drive

I changed the kind of clothes I wear so you can't see me anywhere
And you can't spot me in a crowd, and you can't call my name out loud
I changed the kind of clothes I wear

I changed the tracks underneath the train so you can't find me again
And you can't trace my path, and you can't hear my laugh
I changed the tracks underneath the train

I changed the name of this town so you can't follow me down
And you can't touch me like before, and you can't make me want you more
I changed the name of this town

I changed the lock on my front door, I changed the number on my phone
I changed the kind of car I drive, I changed the kind of clothes I wear

I changed the tracks underneath the train, I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town

Artist: Williams Lucinda
Song: Change the Locks
Album: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road

7. Tom Petty remade that in '96 on the "She's the One" soundtrack
