Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 03:38 PM by Rising Phoenix
I have been on them since I was 3 months old
allergic to everything
and I am still getting over a flu

but I don't want to die
fyi if you missed my er post I went to get my flu checked at my pcp, had a panic attack and was rushed to the hospital with a heart rate over 160

so day 1 without decongestants and I am miserable.

I have to get all my docs to put their heads together to find a way for me to breathe.

shot won't work, I"m allergic
and I am doing all the vicks menthol crap.

woohoo

I really don't care though because I am so happy my dear friend WCGreen is on the mend!

2. I had sinus surgery - took care of that pesky "can't breathe right" problem.
If you haven't seen an ear/nose/throat specialist (otolaryngologist), I suggest that you try it. I finally saw an ENT because of chronic sinus infections, she ordered a CT scan, and whoa! There was a physical reason for my chronic infections that was surgically correctible. I had the surgery (outpatient) and only missed two days of work. My quality of living improved dramatically.

4. Good for you! some more advice...
Turmeric is an effective and natural anti-inflammatory (and bonus! docs are researching possible anti-cancer properties). Taking turmeric may ease the swelling of your sinus passages. I also use a NeilMed bottle 1x-2x a day to flush the airborne allergens out of my sinuses, which does a lot to keep my allergic reactions at a minimum.

5. Are you using a Neti Pot? That would certainly help

7. I do the same thing with a plastic syringe.
No needle of course.

Warm water with a bit of sea salt. Suck it up into a syringe (3 to 5 cc).

Lean head back. Close one nostril with finger. Insert syringe in other nostril. Open mouth. Squirt into nose gently. Swallow salt water.

Repeat on other side with another slug of warm salt water. Blow nose.

Voila! It helps a lot!

8. It's worked miracles for me
especially as a guy in my 40s, decongestants are not good for the prostate...

10. What do you mean?
I went to see a urologist last year when I had a lot of problems getting up at night & having to urinate. She told me that sometimes things like decongestants can cause the prostate to get irritated... but, the office also gave me a pamphlet with a list of other things that could potentially cause prostate problems (artificial sweeteners, I think, was another)

So, since I started using the neti pot last year, I've really cut back on using decongestants and it's really helped me in terms of having to get up at night to pee - and, it's all natural, instead of having to resort to Flomax or similar.

11. I take decongestants nearly every day
what between my sinus problems and allergies. I am also a big consumer of artificial sweeteners. I am also in my 40s. So this information does interest me greatly.

12. well, I'd consult a doctor
before listening to what I say on the internet. The urologist did not recommend the neti pot for me - I just started doing that on my own.
