How much do you tip the delivery guy? (like pizza etc)
I recently had some Chinese food delivered when it suddenly occurred to me that a driver who delivers food does much more work than a waiter inside the restaurant, but it seems that delivery guys don't get tipped as well as waiters. Am I wrong? What's the usual tip for a deliver? And does it depend on the price of what is being delivered?

38. Me, too--
my delivery guys LOVE me.

I do it because I'm paying back the universe for never having to wait tables or deliver pizzas in my life . . . .

11. Holy shit - you buy soda from the delivery place? Are you a $20 million a movie actor?
Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 11:26 PM by Rabrrrrrr
And two six packs only last you a weekend?

When I was drinking what I would call "shitloads" of soda, I don't think I ever came close to drinking that much in a weekend.

2. Why would I tip that slacker? It's not like he knows where I live or anything...
:)

Actually I don't know what we tip these days - my wife has been handling door duties for a while now - but I think it's $4-5 on orders that range from $20-30...

5. Hah, I didn't even think about the "he knows where I live" angle
But that's a good point.

I had figured $5 was a reasonable tip but after I compared that to what a waiter would get, suddenly I felt guilty, so the next time he came I gave him $8 and I still felt guilty! So then the next time I gave him $10.

7. Hmm...good point.
I've been tipping 5 bucks for years, based on 25% of a bill that used to average about 20 bucks. It's more nopw, so I should tip more.

12. Holy crap - I'd tip you some punctuation as well! I'm sorry you are so poor on commas
and periods and capital letters and zeros.

Always sad when someone has to substitute o's for 0's.

10. I tip them the comma that precedes "etc." and the period that follows it.
I feel awful for any poor delivery people who have so little punctuation that they area afraid to use any of it for fear of running out, but who are also willing to waste their "likes" and "e.g."s by pairing them with their "etc."s.

13. I'm a conservationist when it comes to certain punctuation
I don't like putting periods in my et als or my egs or ies or even my etcs

And it's not like I Twitter or text and so have succumbed to the 140-max character mentality. It's some other psychopathology of some sort.

16. If he has correct change, then I tip five bucks.
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 09:03 AM by Zavulon
However, if for instance my bill is 14 bucks and he can't give me back a single for my twenty, I pay him in exact change, in quarters, with no tip. Years and years ago I worked as a delivery driver part time and know it's not as if you go out with a list of fifteen addresses and constantly run out of change - you get three or four addresses and then go pick up another set of orders so that the food stays hot, so there is NO EXCUSE for not being able to break my $20 bill.

This is actually an old paperboy tactic - "sorry, I'm low on change" in hopes you'll hear "ah, don't worry about it" - and it drives me nuts when delivery drivers do it. Have change ready for me, because I'm ordering delivery for my convenience, not yours. Don't have correct change? Fuck you. No tip.

Some drivers tried this a couple of times apiece with me, and after getting no tip either time they suddenly started doing their job and having correct change available. That's when the tips resumed. Funny how that works, huh?

The delivery fee is like 3 dollars already so the pizza is usually like 18.20 or something so I just give then a $20.

26. I'm a delivery driver and.....
Most of you sound quite generous. I myself consider %15 to be a fair tip, usually anything under $2 on any order seems kinda cheap to me.

There are a lotta things to consider when you figure out how much to tip...
-How much was the order. If its like a $50 order you should give the driver 5 bucks minimum.

-How big is the order. This usually goes hand in hand with cost, but I've had $30 dollar orders that fill up 3 delivery bags.

-How far away do you live. If its a bit of a drive to get to your house, give the driver a little extra to compensate.

-What time did you order. You really shouldn't place an order like 30 min before close, thats just messed up. They're working as hard as they can to clean the store as quick as possible so they can go home. Placing an order means you're gonna make them stay a lot longer than you think. If you absolutely have to order, you need to tip big.

Its been pretty tough lately, customers haven't been tipping very well at all and a lot of customers don't give a damn thing. Its frustrating and insulting. BTW, that $2.25 delivery charge, I only get 50 cents of that.

I only get delivery from a couple different places and I particularly am motivated to use them when there is no delivery fee, so that I can give that instead to the delivery guy.

28. Normally, I add $2 to the price then round up to the nearest multiple of $5.
This is for a normal $20 - $25 order.
Larger or special orders will be different.

Minimum $5.00, maybe even $10 for a $15-20 pizza.

30. I stopped getting delivery...
the carryout specials at the local places are about 1/3 as much as the same pizza delivered, even without a tip, plus I can be there when they pull it out of the oven so it's nice and hot when I get it home!

and I'll even hit McD's for a large diet coke for a buck-seven. For some reason, that tastes better than one from a can.

33. the crew at the Papa John's here plays games with the price
They were running a special one night on a 2-topping pizza, so I called and asked if we could split it (my GF at the time was vegetarian) so I think I got pepperoni/sausage on my half, mushroom/peppers on hers, and asked for the whole wheat crust. They said fine, no problem -- doesn't cost them any more to do it that way.

A couple nights later, we decided to do it again, and the same special was being advertised, but this time, the person on the phone tried to charge us $2 extra to split the pizza, and another $2 for the whole wheat crust. So we went elsewhere...

34. 2 bucks.
Wait staff get paid next to nothing and rely on their tips. They also deal with an assload of jerks, and are forced to be pleasant even when they aren't anywhere near in the mood. They get 15-30% depending on the service.

The delivery guy drives to my house (often late), hands me my food (usually with no greetings), takes my money and promptly leaves. Two fucking bucks.
