If you're about to leave or enter a building and you notice there are people behind you, but not directly, will you hold the door open and wait for them? I'm not talking about you're in a line of people moving through a doorway, but there are scattered people moving towards that door.

The rule I kinda live by is if I see them in the reflection behind me, I'll hold open the door, but if they're more than 30 or so feet behind me, I tend not to.

1. No worst...
Holding a door open for a complete stranger and not getting a "Thanks" or at the very least a nod of acknowledgment.

2. tough judgment call really
because you don't want to make them run to get in

totally unrelated but it makes me crazy when people crown on the train when I'm trying to get off
You know...there will be more room on the train if you let everyone OFF first.

5. I hate when people do that on elevators too
Just as you're about to get off, someone always comes storming in, blocking you. Then I love when they have the gall to look at me all pissed off when I push around them so I can actually get out, lol

don't want them to run for it.....but if I can see the whites of their eyes I guess....hehe

longer for elderly, handicapped, people with kids and strollers and for people with lots of bags.

I tend to be there for awhile, but hey what else am I going to do with that 45 seconds.......might as well make someones day a little nicer.

6. I don't do it for very long, only if they are totally close. And I don't do
it and then expect them to say thanks or anything; I do it as it's polite when they are close, rather than just letting it swing and hit them.

9. I'll wait a little longer if the person has difficulty walking
or has kids she's trying to herd.

11. Eight seconds
With the caveat that I have to say something jokingly about how long it was taking them to get to the door like "I was about to give up on you" or "My arm was getting tired".

If it's less than that I don't say anything.

12. I realize that it's my southern duty to defend gentility and chivalry, but I would rather people...
... didn't hold the door for me. I walk very slowly, and I feel like I should speed up. I often say , "Thank you, but go on in."

13. A comical aside- I got stuck in a revolving door in NYC about 20 years ago.
I had never used a revolving door and I was following a friend into his apartment building. I had a suitcase and I miscalculated the required space.

14. Long enough to plausibly give up holding the door just in time to hit them in the face.
A little coping mechanism I picked up to deal with holiday crowds when I used to work at the mall.
