INDIANAPOLIS, March 19 (UPI) -- Two public school teachers have been suspended for spanking six third-graders with a half-inch thick wooden paddle, the Indianapolis Star said.
A group of 9-year-old boys, all classmates at School 48, were paddled at least three strokes each Wednesday by a fifth grade teacher. According to the report, one child was treated at a hospital for bruises and swelling on his buttocks.
One of the boys had been suspended from school three days last week for fighting.
Indianapolis public schools allow teachers to administer corporal punishment but policy states parents should be notified. Indiana is one of 23 states that permits corporal punishment in schools.

They didn't even need parental notification back when I was in elementary school. Luckily, I was never a victim, but I can remember watching classmates get pulled out into the hall and those paddles were thicker than a half an inch. You could hear the swoop of the paddle through the air, and then a loud THWACK! They didn't even bother to do it anywhere private, so you had the humiliation on top of the physical abuse.

I read somewhere about a girl who needed to go to the emergency room after a paddling recently. If any teacher ever did that to one of my kids without notifying me first (not that I'd let them do it anyway) there would be hell to pay.
