A bunch of lying, greedy goblins descended on my porch tonight
I couldn't believe how many adults were carrying their own bags. Then I had repeat kids with their parents lying when I called them on it. The parents were driving cars while the kids rushed in and out to cover the most ground. And then the buckets for babies. You're feeding your babies (under 1 year) mounds of candy?

Then there was this hefty woman with two pumpkins saying, "I have twins at home." She wasn't happy when I suggested that perhaps "the twins" shouldn't be eating so much candy.

Nothing beats the two boys at the end of the night with empty bags. "So how many bags you fill up so far?" I ask. The one lies and says, "We just started." The other looks me in the eye and ask again, "So what number are you on?" Finally, he says, "Five." I gave him two pieces for his honesty.

Very few shouts of "trick or treat" and even fewer "thank yous."

Is it just me or has halloween just gotten meaner and greedier?

I'm thinking next year I might just leave the porch light off.

8. You lie!
Rush wouldn't have even participated in such a socialist holiday in the first place.

10. I *love* the cute little ones
and I don't even mind the teens if they are wearing a costume.

It was the adults and the ones without costumes that bothered me. At least put forth some effort.

18. yeah the lady of the drugstore where i bought more candy (the menfolk
had gobbled up most of what I bought last week, silly me) said that she sees adults truck of treating- I have to say I have not seen that. I haven't really seen any teens lately, either. I used to just tease the teens "where's your costume?" :D

Most of the folks who come here are neighbors- we don't usually get folks in cars or huge masses of people or anything.

6. Haven't seen that here.
Mostly little kids in cute costumes, with mom or dad accompanying them or waiting on the sidewalk. A couple of real small kids didn't say "Thank you," and the parent reminded them, "What do you say?" Nice, polite kids, no pigs. The cleverest costume was on a kid about 11 years old -- he was wearing a sweatshirt with a bunch of those little individual serving cereal boxes fastened to it, and each of the boxes was impaled with a plastic knife. I asked the kid what he was, and he answered, "A cereal killer." I told him he was awesome.

12. Sounds like you had nice kids
I really do like Halloween and the cute kids. I was just disappointed by the behavior of so many of them -- just rude, greedy and entitled. There were some real sweeties with nice parents, but they just seemed to be outnumbered.

I love the cereal killer costume. I would have given him an extra piece or two for that.

9. My dear prolesunited...
That's a shame. Our neighborhood has yet to start coming, but in previous years, we have not had that sort of thing.

I'd leave my porch light off too...

15. I live in the land of SATAN candy..
in a very very small rural southern town, surrounded by fundies.
So, not only do we have a time limit on Halloween ( 6 to 7 pm...sharp)
most of the families take their kids to special church sponsored Halloween functions.
We have only one family with kids in a 2 block radius.

This year we got ONE trick or treater, a woman in a van who kept her kids in the car.
Just drove up to the house, and Mr. D. who was outside walked up to the van, handed the 2 kids candy.
End of Halloween.
Much to Mr. D.'s delight..he eats the left overs, happily.
By 7:30, our block is dark, all porch lights off.

17. i've dealt with that
Edited on Sat Oct-31-09 09:07 PM by fizzgig
my high school/college boyfriend lived in a nicer part of town and people would drive their kids in to trick or treat. his mom would get $40 or $50 worth of candy and be out in 90 minutes, tops. the worst part is that you could see the living room lights from the street and, despite the porch light not being on, the kids would pound on the door until we answered. then the older kids would get nasty with me if i called them on it.

ungrateful little shits

Again, anyone who's ever had the syllable '-teen' in their age is too old for Hallowe'en. Teens and adults have permanently ruined trick-or-treating.

23. I would like to selectively give out candy
to the cute, polite kids in costume, but I'm afraid the ones who don't get candy will come back later and "trick" me.

And you know the year you finally don't buy candy, they will come.
