NEED HELP WITH A RECIPE ASAP!!!! How many pounds are in a cup?
I'm trying to make something and the recipe calls for a cup of sugar.

I don't have any measuring cups in my house, just some scales the previous tenant left.

How much sugar should I use?

11. Well, I would suggest you borrow a set from a neighbor, but
given your attitude, that's unlikely to happen.

And you're cooking without any measuring instruments? OK.

34. Wow, you are dumb
lb is abbreviation for pound. The key in knowing the density of sugar (mass per unit volume).

Here is your answer:

For a chemist, the density of pure, solid, (ungranulated) sugar (sucrose) is 1.59 grams per cc.

If you are cooking, 1.0 cup of granulated sugar weighs 190-195 grams, depending on the brand.

In pounds you want to use .4 lb for a cup.

Wait till your wife gets up and have her give you a cooking lesson. Then head over to Target and get some measuring cups tout suite.

32. Yes, indeed. And of course, by "sea level", I meant "sea level on earth at the present time"
Humidity can indeed make a difference, though, for all intents and purposes, completely negligible for the current application of doing some baking.

And if taterguy is measuring the sugar while traveling near the speed of light in a line or arc non-parallel to the curvature of the earth, that will change things, too, depending on where and when he does the measuring.

cookies are an art and cakes are a science. So if you're making cookies, a little over or under won't matter but precision is pretty important with cakes.

37. Here's a good website
for finding dry weights of most ingredients:

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

1 cup of granulated sugar is 200 grams. 1 pound is .45 kg. So 2 1/4 cups of sugar weigh 1 pound and 1 cup of sugar weighs 6.66 ounces.

Unless it is brown sugar, in which case there are thirteen. And this is as ASAP as I could answer because I found this thread but two minutes ago. So just be happy you finally got a straight answer, Tate.

41. There are only three substances in cooking/baking that weigh the same
as they measure in volume and that's

Water
Milk
Eggs

Everything is either going to be less or more dense than water, eggs, or milk.

Edited on Mon Nov-02-09 06:47 PM by Z_I_Peevey
you should use two cups of sugar.

Unless of course, the scale is a postage scale, then you should use 2.5 cups. If the scale is a standard bathroom weight scale, then go with the two cups.

You're welcome.
