Do I really want an iPhone? Is there something better? (ATT, obviously)
What about a Tilt2? Or one of the new Samsung phones? I think the iPhones look cool, but they seem to be lacking some features. That and I'm not really a "jump on the bandwagon" sort of person.... What would I be missing if I got an iPhone? What would be better about some other phone?

I'm requesting input, if anyone has any.

Alternately, I can tell ATT to fuck off (which wouldn't be hard right now considering that they've really pissed me off over the last week) and get a Droid @ Verizon. Except... I don't think Verizon has that great of service around here, and I hate change.

Oh... no 3g service around here either, in case that comes into play.

1. For the record, AT&T does have better service out there than Verizon.
Edited on Fri Nov-13-09 09:31 PM by GOPisEvil
I am going iPhone as you know. And if you do decide to go with another carrier, they all have calling circles where we can still talk to each other for free. :P

Edit - my "for the record" is my experience.

4. ATT's "service" can pretty much eat a dick right about now.
Yeah, I said it!

Having said it - I'm sure I'll go back to being very happy with my service as soon as I get back to not having to actually talk to those fuckers about anything, or try to make any changes to my service.

BTW - Mom's "overnight" phone still isn't here. The PO looked it up on their intranet software ... there's a slight chance it could be here tomorrow, but the overall consensus is that they think it will be Monday. BUT - ATT credited my account $60. That's the amount it is going to cost ME to send the phone overnight to my mom when it gets here. I was smart and called the Mailboxes Unlimited for a shipping quote to MI - BEFORE I called ATT. AGAIN. Oh, and the "overnight" shipping I paid ATT for? It wasn't even shipped overnight. It was shipped priority. They offered 2 day shipping for FREE. Unbelievable.

5. Every time I call AT&T they are a mess to deal with.
The people in their stores are usually pretty damn on point though. Remember that woman at the store in Austin? She was fantastic. The guy here locally is good too (but we will see if he returns calls like the Austin woman did 6 months later even!).

6. The people on the phone were very nice.
And it didn't seem to be their fault ... it was what they had (or didn't have) to work with. I was, of course, EXTRA nice and understanding - even though it was bullshit. What sucks is that if I had raised hell and been a bitch I probably would have gotten all kinds of concessions. I don't roll like that, though. And I hate that assholes get MORE - my whole thing about rewarding bad behavior, and all that.

I forgot about the woman in Austin. She WAS great.

Unfortunately for ME --- a store would be, what? A one hour drive in either direction?

7. Yeah, stores really are in short supply over there.
The stores also come in handy for getting to play with all the phones. I really tried them all out before coming around to the iphone.

By the way, your first paragraph is one big reason why you are teh awsum. :)

8. One of my pet peeves at work...
Assholes get concessions. People that are nice and/or understanding get nothing. That really bothers me. In MY world the reverse would be true. Assholes would get full price AND charged an additional $1.99/minute for listening to them bitch. Understanding people would get a month's credit without asking. :D

I think I should just crown myself King. Shit needs to change around here, and it would be a heck of a lot easier if I were dictator!

:P

29. Actually, when we owned our business, that's what I did
If someone came in the store and was a complete ass, I always charged them more, and I'd bend over backwards to help out the sweethearts who had a problem. I remember training a new salesperson one day, and I told her what to tack on to the price if someone was a jerk (we did a lot of custom ordering, so had to look up prices for stuff about 90% of the time). "You can do that?" she said. I told her they were going to cost us money down the road, so we might as well get some extra up front.

That's why I'm always nice to salespeople.

30. What I can not get over is the convoluted way they deal with customer service numbers.
If you have landline and internet you call one number. If you have wireless you call another. If you combine two or more of those services you call another. Just have one toll-free customer service number no matter what AT & T service you have. What could be so difficult about that?

It sounds like he has an older model. ANOTHER of my "issues". I just KNOW next year they will release one a million times more kickass then the one I'd get now - and I'd be stuck in contract.

The camera would be a HUGE upgrade for me. My current phone has a 1.3 mp camera - and it's very poor quality. Even a not-great camera would be an improvement.

I definitely don't want to do tethering ... but I understand what he's saying in the context he's saying it in.

Of course - I'm VERY cheap and only just NOW unblocked texting from my phone, so I've only just played with MMS at all. It allows you to send pictures and video, like a text. No data charges. iPhone didn't use to be MMS capable. It is my understanding that they now are.

No other phone comes close to that... Each application extends the functionality of the phone.

The iPhone, iTunes, and App Store ecosystem is what sets Apple apart from the competition.

17. The Tilt was good, but the Fuze was a royal boner. I love my iPhone,
despite the month AT&T hosed up the iPhone data connection. (AT&T admitted it and patched their towers' faulty code...)

Verizon is okay for service, but their locking down of phones' multimedia features just so they can peddle vcast really ticks me off. I summarily dumped them and it took 3 tries to get the idiot I was telling to cancel to realize they lock down their own phones and that I do not want vcast.

I don't know what features you're referring to, possibly from a physical keyboard. I've grown to the sleek style fairly quickly and have actually found a lot more with the iPhone than I ever had for the Tilt.

Camera has no flash or zoom. No bluetooth data transfer option. I'm sure there are other things I'm not thinking about right now.

Also, I don't have 3g where I live, and I rarely venture outside the area. I've heard it's not as usable off the 3g network. Any idea about that?

35. 3G is not that big a deal...

Are there many WiFi hotspots where you normally loiter?

The iPhone will use WiFi in preference to 3G, even if 3G is present. In fact, for large up/downloads, on 3G it will tell you to go connect to WiFi instead of using a lot of bandwidth on the network you are paying to subscribe to.

38. Wifi at home - check. Wifi at work - check.
Multiple computers at each location for use, also. Health issues have been keeping me locked up at home when not at work for a long time now - so I don't get out much. Even when I don't have health issues that make me bunker down, the truth is I am a homebody. Just not this much of one.

As for "around town" locations that I could conceivably be ... not so much wifi. I think it sucks I would have to pay the 10 additional data dollars for 3g ... yet I will almost never use it, and would have to leave town to do so. This is just me whining however, as I am fully aware that I'd be paying for a level of service I wouldn't be able to receive. It's an understood.

I did not ever think I would end up with a smart phone, especially so soon after it was launched.

It's a phone, a 5 MP digital camera w/flash, a PDA, a mini-computer and an MP3 player all rolled up in one!

I was able to use upgrade money for it, so it didn't cost a lot. I like that it's made by Motorola. My last one was virtually indestructable.

I have the BlackBerry Tour, but I'm thinking about switching over to the Motorola Droid. The only couple of complaints I have with the Droid is that it's an all digital phone, it's not a world phone, and they don't have as good of push email service as the BlackBerry does.

given I'm using mine professionally but there is a reason why in an industry dominated by Apple product (the NYC film industry is very very Mac-centric.) you're not taken seriously if you don't own a BlackBerry. It's a better work-platform SmartPhone without the silly apps and the useless toys, bells and whistles.

I want to do this to my BlackBerry 8700:

50. It's the "named" BlackBerrys.
They're all crap...they're designed to be the consumer models (Curve, Storm, Tour, etc.) with the numbered models (8700a-h, 7176, 8915, etc.) being the models designed for business and professional usage...there is a world of difference between the two.

My 8700g is over a year old, was nearly obsolete when I got it, has been dropped down a a stairwell and still works better than most all consumer phones...if you don't care about things like a camera or music player, it's a better phone in terms of capacity and power than even Droid or iPhone, a true pocket-computer as opposed to a gizmo with toys and gimmicky apps.

48. I don't have a choice
My partner has an iPhone through work, and it's a great gadget. I have an iTouch, so I'm aware of the capabilities. However, ATT service at our house is very spotty at best (we have to go outside and lean on a certain post, with tinfoil on our heads), otoh, we get 4 bars with Verizon.

If ATT fulfills your needs, then I say go for it.
