if I reinstall win XP (home), will I lose my settings
e-mails etc. ? I'm getting a reinstall user.exe error. did chkdsk /r until it came back clean (3 times) but had no luck.
Can't use restore and a lot of other programs.

1. No...
not if you choose to migrate your settings. It will just install the OS over the old one. But to be safe, you might try backing up your email settings by exporting them to a different drive.

2. Save your setting to CD
I think XP's migration tool will do that. Just in case

"An error occurred while the wizard was starting.
To close this wizard, click Finish."

can I just copy that file user.exe to /win.../sys/.. like in Win 98 over? I searched, but couldn't find it on the CD...

3. If It Were Me
I would do a clean install by taking advantage of the "format" option. You should save your e-mail settings to another disk along with what files you can transfer safely.

6. For reinstallation you will get the option to "repair an installation"
This will basicly reinstall Windows and you will lose nothing.

7. hard drive disk
go the website of your hard drive manufacturer and get their format disk - do a low level format - takes a long time but the disk will be completely clear - it will only have zeros on it (puters run on 0 and 1) then reinstall.
As for your email settings right click on one of your contacts, select properties and see where it is filed - the you can go and copy the entire thing. If that doesnt work copy addresses by hand but a real format is probably necessary.'

good luck

9. formated everythign. finally I'm back
can I save the old e-mail messages? if so, how do I go about it? Cut and paste the inbox.xx etc? They're on the second drive...before I formated I saved all I could. They're raw files, I couldn't use the transfer settings thing.
