The official nurse appreciation thread
I was in the hospital last week for four days (thankfully all will be well after some surgery in a couple of weeks), and this is my official thank you to some of the best nurses I have ever had the pleasure(?) of being with. They were some of the most caring people I have ever met, and this is my way of thanking thanks.

For Linda - who thankfully yanked the potassium IV out of me after it almost burned my arm up, and who was ALWAYS there when I needed her.

For Sheri - you know what they say - a guy never forgets the first girl who shoved 30" of plastic tubing down his throat. :)

For Kathy - who I looked forward to seeing at 2 a.m., and who even woke me up with a smile.

And for the ENTIRE Fauquier nursing staff responsible for my care - thank you all. It takes a special person to be a nurse, and you all met that criterion - and then some.

Everyone reading this - if you haven't done so already - thank a nurse.

1. A lot of my family members are nurses
My mom, my aunt, and my grandmother are all nurses.

It's a very difficult job, especially when the hospitals don't provide adequate staffing.

:toast: to the nurses out there.

2. OMG 30" of tubing down your THROAT?
Did you throw up all over the place? I guarantee I would've. I gag on bitewings at the dentist.

3. Well....

Without going into too much detail you drink a lot of water as it is going down, so there is a good bit of gagging, but you live through it.

It (the tube) was supposed to go through the nose, but I played hockey as a kid, so those initial efforts were unsuccessful (but they hurt like hell).

4. I once had an endoscopy w/o sedation
That's when they stick a tube with a camera down your throat to look at your insides. It was a treat.

5. Where is this remarkable hospital...
...that has nurses that are not overworked and who have time to actually treat patients in a humane manner?

11. It's in northern VA

But trust me, they are still very overworked. It's just that they made me feel like I was the only patient on the floor, and that is something that you remember.

7. Thanks for the appreciation thread
from one of the DU nurses! I'm glad you're doing better, good luck with your surgery.
We call those tubes "nose hoses", they are awfully uncomfortable! A lot of people complain about them being worse than their surgical site!
It's so great when people let you know they appreciate your hard work. I'm sure the nurses who took care of you enjoyed being there for you.

8. I'm surprised this is not a popular one
How can anyone not have a nurse to thank? I want to thank the ER nurse, name unknown, but when I went in for some tests related to serious abdominal pain, gave me two of those little gowns so my rear end wasn't hanging out on the way to the x-ray. Thanks for preserving my dignity!

Peace!

9. I thank my husband's nurses daily.
No, he doesn't have nursing care everyday, we only see them once a month. But their efficiency and kindness in keeping him and me on track month to month is beyond just job duty.:loveya:

10. Nurse-midwives rock!
Recalling my first prenatal appt. I used the MD for some other procedures I had...wasn't impressed. Switched to the nurse midwives afterward and they rocked! Always time for questions, concerns, and even when I had a few shaky moments, they were always there for me. However, when Baby Fortyfeetunder decided to make his appearance, the CNM was already delivering another baby and I got the staff MD, was OK but oh, well...everything turned out OK. But I am eternally grateful for the service I got from the CNM staff at Group Health Hospital in Seattle WA.

12. My mom's a nurse
Works the night shift, otherwise known as hell. She is so honorable and worthy of praise. Nurses are wonderful, self-sacrificing, great people.

20. Mine was too
She was an RN for about 50 years, retired a few years before her death four years ago. She spent her final weeks in the hospital where she had worked the longest (she also worked in nursing homes and as a private duty RN), and I was very touched by the number of nurses who remembered her, and by all the rest who gave her such special care out of respect for her years of service.

It was great having a nurse for a mom, but she didn't mollycoddle the little hypochondriacs in the family (like me) who would coming running with every little boo-boo and owie. "Mmhmm," she'd say, examining whatever body part was held up for her inspection, "well, it looks like you've got the creeping crud. Don't pick at it and you'll live." She was always right. :)

13. Thank you to the Nurses taking care of my mom everyday.
Mom has lived in a nursing home since having a stroke a couple of years back. Thank you for being there for mom and for doing the things that I would never have been able to do. Thank you for reading her the cards I send, and for helping her with the phone when she wants to call me. Thank you for being her friend especially since I am so far away.

You can never say Thank You enough to a good nurse.

14. To marvelous Mindy at Banner Desert Samaritan, as well as
all the incredible nurses this ID diabetic has had the pleasure to have known: Thank the Lord (or whomever) for all of you.

I know it's tough, and I hope I can even come somewhere close to showing my profound appreciation.

15. Thank You Nurses
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 10:22 PM by iamjoy
A big thank you to the oncology nurses at MD Anderson in Orlando.

Nurses truly are heroes. As busy as they were with all the nursing stuff (and the paperwork they no doubt have) they still are more than willing to fetch a beverage or snack.

The office nurses are always willing to answer questions patients have and go out of their way to treat them like people, not medical problems.

Thank you all nurses.

26. My Grandmother was a Nurse
She was the chief OB/Gyn nurse at the hospital in Gary, IN where the Jacksons (and me) were born

Nurses in Wilmington, NC took excellent care of my Dad as he went through successful cancer treatment.

Nurses at Shady Grove Adventist were outstanding as they cared for my five year old son when he had a dangerous case of the flu. Not only that, but they showed a lot of care for my wife and I.

Good nurses make a huge difference. When I had my appendix out, I was in a Hospital that, I found out later, did not have an excellent nursing staff due to their budget cutbacks. You can absolutely tell the difference good nurses make.

To any Nurses amongst us (and there has to be some) YOU MAKE THIS WORLD A FAR BETTER PLACE and too few of us can say that.
