A DMV counter with fresh flowers, pictures of valedictorians, and cute puppies?

Spent 15 minutes with a wonderful state employee yesterday as I claimed new tags for one of my kid's cars. The computer program kept stalling, so we had a some time to chat. She had on candy cane ornament ear rings, her daughter graduated Montana State at the top of her class, and her new puppy is a beagle named Roxy. An errand I had been dreading turned out to be a pleasant experience with a new friend. Sometimes I miss my old stomping grounds of Little Five Points/Atlanta, the Braves, and Virgina Highlands/Atkins Park restaurants. It felt pretty good to be in BFE Montana yesterday.

1. I remember how shocked I was when I went to get my first Oregon driver's license.

I'd been used to the DMVs in the San Francisco area and in Washington DC... Nasty places, long lines, nasty people, big fees. I walked in to one in Portland, there was no line, and the guy couldn't have been nicer. "Welcome to Oregon!" he chirped. The transaction was fast and easy. Coulda knocked me over with a feather.
