Okay...we have "most mispronounced"...how about most misspelled?
I say "weird" has to be in the top ten. (People just can't seem to get a handle on the exceptions to that "i before e" thing).

Also, "toe the line" (from pre-Marquess of Queensbury boxing; at the beginning of the round the fighters had to stand toe to toe on a line at the centre of the ring)...NOT "tow".

This can bother me almost as much as people who can't speak properly, and there's a lot of it out there...are there any little things like this that especially irritate any of you? (Not talking honest mistakes, here, either, but consistent misspellings...everyone slips up from time to time, but some people don't seem to know they're wrong or care...)

10. The latter is an amalgamation that I thought people would appreciate
"Hypocrisy" is the right spelling.

I came up with "Hypocracy" as an insult against certain entities. It's an amalgamation of "Hypocrisy" and "Democracy".

6. But, truth be told
. . . I'm sure I misspell a lot too, and sometimes even with thinking about it I cannot be exactly sure of some grammatical item, such as occasionally a "whom vs. who."

8. The weird thing about the wierd thing ...
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 07:55 AM by Drifter
is that both spellings look correct to me.

Most times when I misspell something, it usually jumps out at me and looks incorrect. Then I correct it.

I rarely correct my misspelling of the word wierd, because I rarely catch them. I do have to recite the i before e thing.

Cheers
Drifter

edit: spelling ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!

It's complete hogwash. It has so many exceptions that it's unusable.

15. Yeah...
which makes it seem kind of silly that they drill it into the heads of schoolchildren at an early age, thus ensuring a lifetime of misspellings like "wierd" and "foriegn"...heh.

(oh, and by the way, it's "regarding"...lol...)

14. Actually, "tow the line" is an error in diction, not spelling
A fine point, yes, but aren't we supposed to nitpick on this type of thread? One error in diction that bothers me is the use of "jive" where "jibe" is correct. Here's a sentence that illustrates the difference: "If your facts don't jibe, you may be talking jive."

17. Whining v. Whinning
There was this dude from England who I used to debate in a newsgroup who spelled it this way all the time and he insisted that "whinning" is a real word in England that is different than "whining". According to him it means something like "whining very quietly". It's not in any dictionary that I've ever seen.

Hardly anyone gets it right. And as for improper pronunciation, "datta" for "day-ta" and "stattus" for "stay-tus."

25. The word "tongue" gets misspelled a lot
Go to the body-piercing sites and groups and you'll hear from people who had their "tounge" pierced. Or their "tonge."

As body piercer Keith Alexander says, if you can't spell it you shouldn't have it pierced.

29. LOL
years before spell-check I noticed in communications from a certain executive at work the constant use of the word SEPERATE. Since his letters were otherwise flawless I pointed it out to him - he insisted he was spelling it correctly and checked it out in the dictionary - he was so mortified to find out he was wrong. He got it right after that!
