Food allergy vs food poisoning symptoms

God, I was sick last night. I had "breakfast" in the evening at gym. Eggs, toast, and fruit: raw oranges, strawberries, cantaloupe and pineapple. Had not had raw pineapple in a looong time.

Head started hurting soon afterwords. Felt like flu was coming on. Eyes ached. Really, really bloodshot by time I got home and were slightly swollen. Soon had some trouble swallowing, hurt like if you've eaten to much peanut butter w/ no liquid, if you know what I mean. Then stomach churning. Eventually vomiting and diarrhea, the latter of which lasted most of the night.

Feel wrung out today, but it's over. I guess my main concern is to find out if this sounds more like an allergic reaction, with the main suspect, in my mind, pineapple.

But I'd say that the throat closing-off feeling is a big sign of an allergy for sure. Sounds miserable. Poor you. Check with a doctor, and I'm glad you're feeling at least somewhat better. :hi:

Sounds like food poisoning to me, except for the swallowing thing. You might check it out with your doctor...they do have tests for food allergies. In the meantime, I guess there's no pineapple in your future!

if the fruit was washed properly.I've had food poisoning,it takes awhile to get over.

If it is, you need to know about it because food allergies can be fatal.

I say it was definately an allergic reaction to something. The only thing that has worked and GOTTEN RID OF MY ALLERGIES....honest this is not an ad or something, its just if you have life threatening allergies and got rid of them, you would know what I mean.

You are lucky, you could have died, sounds like you suffered anaphylactic shock. Sounds like the pineapple may be the culprit as you have not had it for a long time so it would be the out of the ordinary thing you ate. Although I must tell you, you can develop an allergy at any time.

Anyway here is my recommendation from experience. Go to www.NAET.com there is a lookup on the left for practitioners. It is a non-invasive and very inexpensive way to find out what you are allergic to and reverse your reaction so you won't experience it in the future. Good luck.

They will take you right away. That WAS INDEED a food allergy..the difficulty breathing is what is known as an anaphylactic response. It REALLY (I am NOT making this UP) can kill you...especially the part where you discuss throat tightness...sometimes it can be accompanied by hives. I don't have many allergies but the few that I do have are this severe...I have to keep epinephrine injections handy for them.

I know you can develop allergies to foods that have once been OK. I kept thinking of that movie "Fearless" re: strawberries. I got kind of panicky at one point, thinking that if the swallowing thing continued to escalate at pace, I'd be in trouble. But it kind of leveled out.

I guess I've always associated stomach stuff w/ food poisioning, hive and swelling etc. w/ alleries. Can they co-exist in both allergies and food poisoning? I've had friends w/ some food reactions, but as I recall, no stomach stuff w/ them.

Couple of posts came up while I wrote this. I agree about the medical advice on a chatboard. Believe me, I'm gonna get it checked out. I didn't last night b/c it happened so fast and the swallowing thing went away after vomitting.

We can just let this thread sink. Got some informed opinion and plan to make appointment w/ doc tomorrorow.

My allergy to corn will cause some respiratory problems, but a lot of vomiting and diarrhea.
