What do you REALLY want to do for a living?
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 04:20 PM by DancingBear
You've got a chance to change careers, and do something you've always wanted. What would it be?

I used to be a Systems Architect - mostly wireless LAN's in conjunction with real time locating systems ("indoor" GPS, if you will). I hated the on-demand travel, the perpetual need to stay connected via phone/pager, and the "I graduated last week" wet behind the ears kids who ran half the start-ups into Chapter 7.

So I quit, "woodshedded" for a bit, and now I design/build custom furniture.

My wife is a Senior Financial Planner, and is going to school one day a week in Horticulture/Landscape Design. Hopefully (soon) she'll be able to get away from balanced portfolios and long term retirement planning and work outdoors.

What's your dream, and how close are you to fulfilling it?

And I'm one year, two months and one week away from achieving it! (At least, earning my law degree; then I have to pass the bar before I can truly call myself an attorney!)

At age 41, I'm very proud of myself for going back to school, getting my BA and then starting law school at this advanced age. If I can do it, you can too - so DO IT!!!

12. Build houses for the poor
using papercrete. This product utilizes and recycles all kinds of paper, including magazines, which are put into a mixture of cement and water. The outcome is a lightweight, fire- and bugproof building material. We've seen videos on it, and are charged up to try it in real life. If we are successful, we wish to help a local co-op lending institution that is trying to build low income housing.

If it does work out, we'll have a new house on our land plus a Dances of Universal Peace hall and a place for a retreat/retirement center.

God willing, this will happen.

55. Papercrete sounds like homemade Hardipanel
Hardipanel is a product made in Australia from wood powder and Portland cement. It is siding, and exceptional siding at that--the very best siding you can get, and priced competitively with vinyl. The difference between Hardipanel and papercrete is that Hardipanel is pressed, which increases its strength dramatically while making it thin enough to use as siding. (It also explains why Hardipanel is made in Australia--the only woods that will survive the pressing process grow in Australia.)

I like the papercrete idea. Let me make a slight suggestion to your dream: instead of just building houses for the poor, set up a papercrete block manufacturing plant. Sell most of the block you make to other liberals who will use them for homebuilding, then use the profits to build houses for the poor.

13. Dream career
OK, i sell real estate, a job i like actually, but then again i used to be an accountant so real estate is like dream job compared to that. What i would really like is to have a coffee shop that sold actual coffee, you know black or with cream and sugar, no lattes or espresso's. I would have a couple of televsion sets tuned into the news i like to watch, BBC, Cspan and now and then Cnn. I would have newspapers from the the cities i have lived in and the ones i like to visit, i would serve some food, but only what i actually like to eat..ie donuts but not from krispy kreme, muffins but no poppyseeds and butter, not spread. I will call my shop the news cafe and i understand that not everyone likes what i like, but too bad, it's my store!

Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 05:13 PM by tridim
Although I'm probably too shy to be a director and I suck as a manager. Maybe a cinematographer or editor? I've also been teaching myself 3D animation for about 5 years and I think I'm ready to take the dive. I just don't know if I want to make it my job because I'd hate to get sick of it. I used to like programming, but it's been my job for so long that I hate it now.

46. I want to help as many lives as possible start in a good place
I am in nursing school and I hope to work in postpartum care in maternal child health. Having a child under the best of circumstances ("easy" birth, supportive partner) is a hard enough adjustment, but many, many women (probably most perhaps) have difficulties in one way or another, but there they are- as mothers. Those first few days are important enough to effect lives forever. I have felt called for some time to be a person who can help in some way to provide necessary physical and medical care, yes, but to also, I hope, if I can still be idealistic enough, to help get many lives off to the best possible start. I had thought about going into nursing 10 years ago, but other things in life made that difficult. Then in the two years before I had my youngest child, I worked as a post partum doula, in which I was there to provide support for new moms in a less clinical way (primarily I provided much help to new moms with my extensive lactation knowledge as a layperson) and it was there I decided that I truly felt called for this in my life. :)
