PSA: Reduced-fat Skippy is NOT peanut butter.
So I'm in my new place, complete with toaster (can the Ellen jokes, please; I'm male, and besides, it was a toaster oven), and I'm jonesing for a childhood favorite, English muffins with peanut butter. Off to Safeway I go. So as to try and reduce my considerable bulk somewhat, I go for the reduced-fat Skippy.

Only when unpacking same do I notice that it says "peanut butter spread, made with 60% peanuts"! It also includes soy protein, and, um, corn syrup solids. It comes in the same jar as Skippy, but it is not peanut butter! :wtf:

1. I have gotten in the habit of reading labels
It definitely will give you pause sometimes. I have wound up changing my buying habits.

2. My dear KamaAina!
Plus, it tastes awful!

There are easier, better ways to reduce your bulk...

3. Neither is regular skippy. The only use I have for that peanut flavored Crisco is
making fudge, cookies, or frosting. For toast or sandwiches I need the all-natural Smucker's or Teddy Bear smooth stuff. :D

4. Peanut butter is serious fucking business.
I won't buy anything but the cheapest generic peanut butter made with only 3 ingredients: Peanuts, salt, and some kind of vegetable/seed oil.

None of the name brands are real peanut butter any more.

I also discovered when I was in the south that down there they add Molasses in most of what they call "peanut butter." :puke:

6. I can't stand Jif or Skippy.
They taste like peanuts, NOT like peanut butter.

And Peter Pan has too damn much sugar in it.

it's likely filled with shit that will kill you.

16. Whole Foods had one of their store brands
(365 I think) that didn't separate but didn't have hydrogenated oils, and not much sugar. I liked it.

10. I get the hippie kind that you grind at the store and take home in a little deli tub.
It actually tastes like peanuts and not like congealed oil and added sugar. Crazy idea, I know, but it grows on ya.

11. Whole Foods used to have a machine that allowed you to do that.
It was very handy, and since you refrigerated it immediately, it never separated!

:hi:

13. All Skippy is like that --my Ag prof once told us they sell the peanut oil
and replace it with vegetable oil --increases their profit margins.

i still like crunchy Skippy (regular or reduced fat) in the same way i like Taco Bell. i can like them without thinking they are 1) peanut butter 2) mexican food.

14. I like the new Jif Natural
I hate the grittiness of the organic/natural/health food store type peanutbutters. I love regular Jif, but started eating the new Jif Natural. Wish I could find it in bigger jars.

15. I did the same thing, but by mistake.
I wasn't going for lower-fat or "diet" PB. Just grabbed the wrong jar.

We'll eat it, then get the normal stuff when it's gone.

17. I have a love hate relationship with peanut butter. I hate the stuff filled with lard or icing
sugar (or whatever the filling is). But I hate how the health food store 100% pure peanut butter separates into oil and butter.

Or Berkeley, even. This is unfancy northeast San Jose. All the upscale markets are downtown or to the west. Here in Berryessa, it's Safeway or bust. :(
