Why are there fullscreen versions of movies?
It's an abomination and should be banned. Fullscreen is like taking a boxcutter to the Mona Lisa just so you could fit it into a smaller frame.

2. Not necessarily
A lot of "letterbox" presentations cut the top and bottom off of "full screen" original footage.

Also, if you have what used to be a "normal" size TV, letterbox just makes everything so damn small.

3. Because having to watch a widescreen movie on a regular television is distracting as hell.
I can't stand that.

5. Because, believe it or not, a lot of us aren't so media-focused that we've blown thousands on --
some gigantic big-screen plasma monstrosity. We're actually watching on NORMAL-sized TVs. And on normal-sized TVs, your "letterbox"-style movies are just too teeny-tiny to see.

I know, I know, ridiculous of me to consider the point of view of poorer people (or just people who don't spend money like drunken sailors) in these tough economic times. :eyes:

And I won't buy anything other than widescreen. DVDs.

Besides, I watch my DVDs on my computer these days.

7. I think all movies are shot in cinemascope
I think all the movies that are in full screen or wide screen are croped from cinemascope. That's what I always thought anyway.

8. Generally, I agree...
...but some movies are shot in TV proportions. In fact TV dimensions were originally chosen to match 35mm movies. A lot of old movies are shot in 35 or even 16mm, of course, as are a lot of shows and movies made for TV. The Evil Dead was shot on 16mm and was not widescreen even at the theater. Home movie cameras might also be formatted for TV. And a small TV might be better off with pan-and-scan so the image is not tiny.

Generally, however, I prefer widescreen for the reasons you mentioned.
