Roy E. Disney dies
Edited on Wed Dec-16-09 09:36 PM by begin_within
This is truly sad because I view him as the man that "saved Disney." Walt Disney's nephew Roy was influential in creating the string of successful animation hits for Disney in the 1990s and was a driving force behind keeping the true Disney dream and spirit alive, in the face of possible corporate takeovers and a string of clueless Disney executives, and his "Save Disney" web sites and stockholder campaigns literally saved the company and the Disney legacy from the jaws of Disney CEOs like Ron Miller in 1984 and Michael Eisner in 2005. This was a man proud of his family's legacy and contributions to American culture, and fought against them being shredded for profit by greedy MBAs interested only in extracting maximum profit. His philanthropic activities included sponsorship of the Roy E. Disney Center for the Performing Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two of Disney's pet projects in later years included efforts to save the peregrine falcon, which was inspired by a nature film he made, and the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he helped carry out the dream of Walt and his father to build and sustain a top arts college in Southern California. The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, part of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, is scheduled to open in spring, 2010. A man that DUers can and should respect.
