Yeah, parts of the story get sort of silly and there's some real face-slapping idiocy in it, but for the most part the sonofabitch holds up like a 1950s Mercedes but with all the whizbang cool wowness of the Enterprise-D.

the 3D effects? Totally in the "HOLY SHIT!" scoring range.

Great story for liberals and progressives and people of morality and ethics.

Awful story for freeps, republicans, teabaggers, Christian fundamentalists, and people who hate to think.

Well, scratch that last one - even the average ignorant American movie goer, while totally missing the point of the story, while be totally engrossed in the "Ooh look - sparklies!!!!!!!!!" nature of the film (such as my family, with whom going to a movie leads to such incredible conversational deconstruction and critique of the film as we'd have if we watched a brick wall for two hours picking at our asses).

Rabrrrrrr says: James Cameron has redeemed himself for the artistic sin and stain of "Titanic".

I can respect him again.

1. Aliens meets Dances with Wolves
But, yeah, worth the price of admission. 3D/IMAX is the way to go, I agree.

Three hours just flew by. It was so good, my butt didn't get sore from sitting.

Compare this to Titanic, where I was just wishing the damn ship would just sink already, so we can get out of here.

:hi:

16. The idea of Dances With Wolves about this movie--
who came up with it initially? It is being parroted everywhere. I'm curious.

2. I watched it in 3D at a regular theater and it did look great,
but after about 10 minutes I pretty much forgot about the 3D and just got into the movie. I have a friend who saw it at an Imax in Chicago and she said it was stunning.

I may be one of the few non-Amish people left who has never seen "Titanic". I simply refuse to watch it, even for free. I think when it was out I took my 6 year old daughter to see, of all things, "Lost in Space" which may be the only movie we have never stayed to watch to the end. Still I would rather have seen that than "Titanic".

3. I'm another one who hasn't seen "Titanic".
Something about all the people who went and saw that movie umpteen times in the theater made me just go, "Oh well, I figure they've used up my turn..."

I felt the same way about "Ghost" and "Home Alone", but ended up seeing them one after the other during a sleepover. (My girlfriends insisted. I didn't die of the experience.)

29. I've never seen Titanic, either, but not for the reasons most give.
What I said to friends then stands even now:

"I know how it ends: the ship sinks and thousands die. Not something I really want to see, even in documentary form."

Gotta wait for DVD and deal with little... unless I win a lotto or something and can take a cool vacation somewhere with amenities like movie theaters.

5. 3D-ish?

That's a good term. I heard the movie sucked, unless you like all visuals with no plot. Still, I like the term: "3D-ish" - LOVE it!

12. Of course not - that's the Holy Grail of movies! Nothing comes close to it.
Even "Citizen Kane" is but a mere "Weekend At Bernies 2" compared to it.

it's not cameron's own word.
dictionary.com even has a definition for it-

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/unobtanium
something highly desirable that cannot be found; a fantastic, perfect metallic substance. (See also obtanium.) : "Of course, his bike is made of unobtanium and should stand up in a volcanic eruption".

Stunning, beautiful, and as a Native American, early on I was not looking forward to the ending..
It is kind of like Dances with Wolfs, meets Alien, meets Lion King.

30. I went in with no expectations
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 01:06 AM by AllenVanAllen

And really enjoyed it. The lack of completely original or complex story isn't what stood out for me. What did was the astounding beauty of Pandora and the Na'vi. The focal point of the story was the Na'vi and their deep connection with nature and the invaders' complete disconnection from it. Living in balance with nature instead of subduing it is an utterly beautiful concept to me. So for me Avatar was more of a spiritual story than a cerebral one.
Avatar was meant to inspire a love for our natural world. A world who's oceans and rain forests are being decimated for profit as I write this. I for one, am glad he made this movie and I hope it's message inspires many to do a little more to preserve our own little "Pandora."

Also, being a huge fan of acclaimed artist Wayne D. Barlowe's "alien" creature designs over the years, it was wonderful see to them "living and breathing" once more!

Here's some of his past designs you might be familiar with:

Sea Strider

Daggerwrist

Bladderhorn

plot on different levels. I think I'll go even if I don't think there's a plot for the visuals. And I agree that it needs to be seen in 3D at an IMAX.

I'll probably try to in the future though. It was probably the most visually stunning parable ever.
I went with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. :hi:
