TSA Stole My Mom's Pecans
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 12:39 AM by JCMach1
She had packed two large bags to bring on her visit to UAE. She had those lovely inspection tickets in the luggage and NO pecans.

I know what you are saying: small price for security, right!?

:grr:

4. Oh, that is really awful...
Next time, have her ship them ahead of time.

Never pack anything in the checked luggage that is irreplaceable.

NEVER.

I'm so sorry...

8. I always make sure to pack some really vile dirty undies right on top in
my luggage to create the worst possible experience for the TSA goon who opens my bag and rifles through it.

That's a shame about the pecans. Just be grateful it wasn't a piece of jewelry like the one a friend of mine had stolen by some TSA lowlife.

13. I truly am sorry and in no way intended to diminish the loss. As an
aside, I love the Green Day quote. More "cons" than "heroes" these days for sure.

25. Jesus Christ - fresh from the tree?!?!?! That's why they were confiscated.
Lucky they didn't get arrested or fined for it.

10. Well, yes. The security of the food supply IS important.

I suspect it was actually the UAE's Agriculture Dept. that confiscated them, or perhaps USDA. All countries have rules about transporting agricultural products across borders. They are trying to avoid introducing agricultural pests and diseases, which can spread and destroy food crops. Our country spends billions of dollars every year trying to prevent the introduction and spread of disease like foot and mouth disease, rabies and bovine tuberculosis, which is why it's really difficult to bring meat products and live animals into this country.

11. I agree and yet it is the large cargo ships that bring in nasty things
like the emerald ash borer and the strain of termite that has wreaked havoc in New Orleans.

15. Well, in theory those cargos are inspected. I understand the rules

have changed in recent years, but about 5 years ago I worked in a parts warehouse. Stuff going out to China and Europe had to go out on special plastic pallets designed so insects couldn't hitch a ride. Stuff coming in came in on the most shitty wooden pallets you can imagine. Lots of them fell apart getting unloaded from the trucks.

17. and it is those pallets that then make there way everywhere and are recycled
there is a mulching facility not far from where i live where they turn old wooden pallets into mulch and that process probably doesn't kill all the vermin.

19. Every time I've gone through an agricultural inspection
it's been as part of a customs check. Food doesn't just disappear from your luggage, they take it and explain to you why you're taking it.

Now, UAE may do things differently but somehow I doubt that protecting the pecan crop is a big priority for them over there. :D

24. Please file a theft report.
Make sure there are official records of theft while your baggage was in the hands of security handlers. It won't do you any good, but those records will prevent the TSA from being able to claim that this shit never happens. It will prevent them from being able to claim that their employees are all wonderful saints who only care about our security. These records are seen and used.

The theft is a horrible violation. :(

The pretext that TSA is supposedly there to protect us is incredibly dishonest and just as offensive.
