It is a different experience and it will take some getting used to.

My recommendations:
1. Read, Read, Read - it can very easy to get behind on your reading
2. If you have books for the class read, read, read...
3. You may have a lot of links to .pdf documents if you are able I would suggest printing them it will give your eyes a break from the computer.
4. Pay attention to your due dates - This week I freaked myself out because I thought yesteday was the last week of January.....yea my partner laughed at me.....so needless to say crisis averted I wasn't behind.

Hang in there it will get easier.

7. The reading is gonna kill me.
Plus, I just realized the bookstore neglected to give me a required reading so now I have to make sure they still have a copy or I am ska-rooon!

6. You can do anything!
I'll fuck you sideways, if you think that would help...but I know you don't need assistance from anyone!
Thus far you've accomplished way more in life than an online course...Of course you can do it!
You are graywarrior!
That means something!

peace~

11. Here's an assignment (or the sources for one I gave today)
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 10:36 PM by darkstar
As I said in class today, I’ve got some links for you towards Essay #2: The Historical Future. These first two are to some retro-future sites and blogs. Tons of nosing around to do in these—plus some external links—both by decades in general and narrower subject matter.
http://www.retrofuture.com/
http://www.paleofuture.com/

Next are two links to lists of “social science fiction” films. We can discuss other possibilities in class, but perhaps start looking here.
http://beerandscifi.com/2008/07/utopiandystopian-sci-fi-films/
http://snarkerati.com/movie-news/the-top-50-dystopian-movies-of-all-time/

And there’s good old youtube. Try, for example “kitchens” of the future, cars, education, clothing, air travel, education along w/ various decades. Here’s one that kicked up when I searched “cars of the future 50s” (and it includes some kitchens as well!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_ccAf82RQ8

Remember, we will be trying to characterize the "zeitgeist" of a decade OR create a narrative of how cultural projections and thinking around ONE idea (the kitchens, etc. above) changed in significant ways. In order to achieve these goals, multiple sources (movies, web links, youtubes, *and stuff you dig up on you own*) should be used and mixed & matched.

EDIT: sorry to spam and run, Gray...I was in the middle of posting and had a cooking emergency. Anyhow, I'm really excited about the assignment and just had to share somewhere.....

12. Is the problem the volume of reading/assignments, or navigating the course?
Sounds like it's volume of work.

Hang in there. That's one disadvantage with online courses, the burden is much more on the student to keep up.

13. Hang in there!
Everyone so far has given you spot on advice. Printing up computer reading can be a huge help, and just make sure you keep up keep up keep up.

15. Did you find that book?
If not try e-bay or Amazon. I've had to resort to that since locally I can only get bundled, $250 versions. Fuck that.

16. How many class hours did you sign up for?
Do you think you overdid it because online seemed easier than realtime classes? What institution are you going through?
