Can I apply for some of that federal farm subsidy money like Michelle Bachmann
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 11:24 AM by WileEcoyote

Here's the deal, I own a large acreage parcel deep down in the Southern California Desert. Right now my family farm is growing Buckhorn Cholla, Creosote Bush, Burroweed, various seasonal wildflowers and a couple of scattered Ocotillos.

It's a beautiful situation as it requires no irrigation, no seeding, weeding nor any kind of maintenance at all.

But I don't have to tell USGA this! No need to tell them I intend to keep these fields in the same crop year in year out. Why not threaten them that I will put in cotton if I don't receive farm subsidies?

Fair is fair. Someone help me with the angles on this. Reward offered!

1. Ol' farmer Chuck Grassley and his family knock down @ $100k/year
from subsidies. It is a family thing with Chuckles showing his son and grandson how to work the dole.
I hate to see it where generation after generation is on the dole like that. It is a cycle of dependency.

2. a rich dude I did some work for planted pecan tree saplings on his property
and claims to now be a "green farmer" he gets a huge tax credit and the first pecans will not be ready for harvest for at least 12 years. His friend became a blueberry "farmer" and will not be ready for harvest for a few years as well.

Mind you, it goes without saying that neither of these men will ever harvest a damn thing. This is a pure tax dodge on their part and it works.

4. I just want the subsidy
Don't pay any taxes so the credit wouldn't help (wink)

5. actually, you may be qualified for conservation help

generally you have to actually be in ag, but check with your local NRCS office - they often know about programs for small land holders and can work with you on private property. Fish and Wildlife Service sometimes has $$ available for habitat protection/enhancement (usually water development in the west).

Natural Resources Conservation Service. Also check The Nature Conservancy, (although they may just be interested in having you donate your land to them so they can resell or trade) or other environmental orgs, land trusts, etc.
